Back pass rule - Fantastic innovation

Featured Replies

Let's just say I'm a mature fan, all I have left is my long term memory!

As a kid in the 70's I remember the opposition defenders at Maine Road would often spend a few minutes during the game simply accepting the ball from the goalie and passing it back to him repeatedly, usually the defenders took turns. It was mind numbing, usually when the opposition were one or two goals up.

That simple rule revolutionized the game overnight, but largely went unmissed.

The other significant rule change was three points for a win replacing the dreary two points.

That change also had a dramatic effect.

Oh, aye....... while I'm reminiscing ack in those days everyone under the age of 40 wore their colours, if you form't you wern't considered a fan, a scarf was compulsory!

Also football violence was endemic back then, everyone wore colours but the nutters went OTT, hats, scarves round the neck and one silk one tied around the wrist.... you looked the business along with your flares and long hair!

Now mocking the opposition scarves.... well that's another story as I'm sure a few 'mature students of the game ' will remember!

Blue Grandad (well not quite yet!) signing off.

Note to self: Don't go to the boozer for no reason on a Monday night.
