More scouse delusion

I’ve just been reading this article on the BBC Sport site about PSG and their new owners. There’s nothing of great interest in there as usual for the BBC’s football journalism. They didn’t even mention that in the mid 80’s Racing Club Paris gained wealthy backing and recruited star players like Enzo Francescoli and Pierre Littbarski. It didn’t really work out and they are now far down the divisions in France.

But what did strike me was that most of the article is made up of quotes from Liverpool’s director of football, Damien Comolli. And he talks a load of utter sh*t.

For a start he reckons that while PSG will likely dominate in France that they will struggle to make any impact on the Champions League because the French league is too weak to provide them with regular high quality opposition. That’s b*llocks because Lyon have made it to the later stages quite often in recent years and they haven’t had the ability to buy top class players to bolster their squad as PSG now have. And playing in a weaker domestic league didn’t stop Porto winning it recently. He then points us out as a club who haven’t been able to win it. I’m sure it’s some sort of dig.

And then the best bit is the deluded rubbish he comes out with at the end of the article. Firstly he reckons that:

“a top player will always want to play for Liverpool before PSG because of its history and the Premier League's competitiveness."

When exactly was Liverpool’s last top player signing? It would surely have been Torres wouldn’t it? They don’t exactly seem to be fighting off the likes of Messi, Ronaldo, Aguero, Neymar, McEachran etc do they? And I wonder if Pastore would have come to England instead of France if the option was PSG or Liverpool. I strongly suspect he would still be house hunting on the left bank.

When the question “And what about other top European teams - need they fear a newly-rich PSG?†is posed. He replies;

"I think it will change French football, but I don't think it will have an impact on European football," said Comolli. "Liverpool will always be Liverpool, Real Madrid will always be Real Madrid and Inter Milan will always be Inter Milan."

Liverpool haven’t even been in that comp for couple of years, and they’re not even in European competition at all this year!

Their fans have given us so much of this history cr*p in the last few years that now not only their fans, but journalists and their club management have somehow convinced themselves that they were, are and always will be THE unrivalled giants of European football. FCKIN A55HOLES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can't read too much into this Snedger. It's a bland media soundbite. He's pandering to their fans, doesn't mean he actually believes a word of it.

BTW I'd say their last top player signing was Suarez. It pains me to say it, but he is top quality.

You're probably right on both counts Spiller. The Beeb have been slowly turning their site into a Liverpool fan site with endless Lawrenson articles licking Dalglish's behind. And most of their blog thingies seem to be about Liverpool.

And yes, I did think Suarez myself. But while I do think that he will become a great player, I kind of dismissed him as I don't think he is quite a top player just yet. By Chritsmas he probably will be.

I'd still like to see how Liverpool would fare in a transfer struggle for a player with PSG or City or ourselves. That might just actually show how much their history counts for.
