It's a long story, but..

does anyone have a start-up disk for an HP deskjet F2480, that they would be willing to lend me in order to reinstall my one which is only 18 months old, but has recently been uninstalled...

Ever since I had had it I'd never been able to scan photos into my computer, and since I had a visit from two very IT wise (allegedly) friends , I thought here was my chance to make proper use of my deskjet.

Alas, two hours later when they had uninstalled my printer without telling me that's what they were going to do, my computer no longer recognises that it has a printer, and I have absolutely no idea where I put the start up disk. I have found all sorts of things I'd forgotten I had, but no disk.

So, as a last desperate resort before having to go out and throw plastic at a new printer/scanner, I thought I'd appeal on here to see if anyone more organised than me had the same printer and had carefully filed the disk somewhere that it would be easily found in case of need.

I promise faithfully to return it immediately.

Sorry I can't help you directly, but you can download a driver from your printer from the HP site:

HP Deskjet F2480 All-in-One Printer

Choose your operating system from the drop-down list.

Click "Next" (cancel the popup)

Then choose your download from the list that appears

Or if you don't want to download and install the drivers, follow the link to the CD-ROM order page

Thanks, Hutch, I tried in vain to download and install - my computer has a secret hidey hole where it dumps downloads so that I can never find them!

So I have ordered the CD online for 15 Euros - much cheaper than buying a new printer which is what I was going to have to do.

I appreciate your help! You are a good chap (in other words not a T.C.!)

If you attempt the download again, a window will pop up asking for you to OK the download. This window displays the destination folder for the file you have already downloaded, so you can then look in that folder - It might be called "My Documents/Downloads", or might be something else, but you should already have the file(s) you need on your hard drive.

Yes, I know that a window SHOULD pop up. Trouble is it doesn't. When I download something I only ever have the option to save or cancel - never to run. My son who is a million million times cleverer than me at stuff like this, was completely baffled by it!

In fact every man I've ever mentioned it to has smiled pityingly, sat down at my computer saying "Do';t worry, I'll soon sort it out." only to stand up sheepishly considerably later saying "Ah sorry, I don;t know what's happening here!"

But thanks for the suggestion anyway.

So you've basically

So you've basically asked Avram Grant and Felipe Scolari to help you out.

I see there has been an error in my reply. And now I cant edit it. Which means a pretty decent joke has lost its sheen.

Hey, just post it again. I promise to laugh uproariously!

So assuming you have saved this file already, do a search using windows explorer or "my computer". The file is called DJ_AIO_06_F2400_NonNet_Basic_Win_enu_140_175.exe, so search for DJ*.exe (the star is like a wild-card). Once found, you can run this file by double clicking it. I would also recommend downloading and running the diagnostic program offered on the same page as this driver package - It might fix whatever is wrong at the moment.

Thank you for that. My computer recognises that it used to be there, but says it has been suppressed (the other annoying thing is that the computer is bilingual and you never know which language it's going to reply in) So my "friends" obviously successfully uninstalled it!

Since I can;'t get into it I also can;t run the diagnostic page - if I ever win a largish sum of money on the lottery I shall buy a new computer!

I've ordered a new CD from the page Hutch gave me.
