Arsene : Chelsea has a mentality of a boxer

The Frenchman argues that winning the title has given Sir Alex Ferguson?s side a slight psychological edge but, at the same time, the Stamford Bridge side have a mentality of a boxer. They are happy to soak up punishment then seek to capitalise when their opponents are weary. Their 1-1 draw with Arsenal on May 6 was the perfect example.

?I watched that game again,? said Wenger just before the end of the Premiership campaign. ?You always leave the pitch with your last impression and that is sometimes dangerous.

?In the first 25 minutes of the second half we dominated the game. But then it became too easy, too show-off. When it came back to 1-1 our heads dropped and they thought ?oh maybe we can do something special here and keep it all alive?. They had a fantastic response.

?That is a little [characteristic] of Chelsea. I feel they are like a boxer. They let you box, box, box then when you are half-dead they kill you off because they have that natural individual strength in their bodies. Take Essien, Mikel or Lampard. In the 85th minute they can go through you like [a knife] through butter.?

I greatly admire Wenger at times for his obvious intelligence and insight into the game and dislike him at others (same with Jose actually!) and I love his analysis there, spot on.

I also liked the fact he mentioned Mikel too.

Players like Mikel, Essien and Drogba are Mourinho players to a fault, very physical, will run all day all over the place without complaint, talented and have a great team ethic.

I read an article a while back where one of the players commented upon how training under Jose totally changed when he came in and now they were much fitter towards the end of a game.

So when other teams are flagging after expending huge amounts of energy trying to beat us, Chelsea absorb the pressure and then come back in the last 10 minutes and give them the knock out punch.

Chelsea are a very physical team but a quality one and that training method has paid off big time - I've forgotten the statistic but we scored one hell of a lot of goals last season in the dying minutes of a game.

Nice one Arsene.

26 goals in the last ten minutes. I think we did something like 6 consecutive as well. icon_eek.gif
