Coventry's Steve Kean says he has been approached with a view to joining Luiz Felipe Scolari's new management team at Chelsea.

Former Brazil coach Scolari will become The Blues' new manager from 1st July when his contract with Portugal, who he is coaching at Euro 2008, expires following five years at the helm.

Kean, who is fluent in Portuguese from his time with Academica Coimbra during his playing days, is currently assistant manager to Chris Coleman at Coventry, who he worked under at Fulham and Real Sociedad.

The one-time Celtic player was flattered to hear the Premier League giants were interested in his services, but he explained he is committed to The Sky Blues and is looking forward to his future with the club.

Exciting project

"There was someone acting on behalf of Scolari who contacted me about a role at Chelsea," he told the club's official website. "I was very honest and explained that I'm under contract on a very exciting project at Coventry.

"I can speak Portuguese, I've got a lot of experience in the Premier League and I suppose I tick the boxes of what they're looking for to help Scolari get started over here. That's probably where it has come from.

"I have to say I was very flattered by the approach but the simple fact is I'm at Coventry and we are just getting started on something very exciting.

"We'll be starting a busy pre-season soon and I'm looking forward to working with the players and getting ready for a new season I'm very excited about."
