I don't really understand how there can be a debate about him anymore.
physically he's basically the same as ever (or at least, the changes are relatively small and shouldn't have changed him as a player very much), mentally something has gone and won't ever come back regularly. certainly not at chelsea.
if you accept the player he is rather than the one he was or the one we thought we'd get it sort of simplifies things. or it does for me anyway.
he's essentially a better version of emile heskey (post leicester): good in the air, hard working, runs the channels, unselfish but entirely lacking as a penalty box player. he doesn't offer a discernible goal threat. if you can digest that then it becomes easy to see his value. he's a six or seven out of ten player and he's certainly not without his uses. is he good enough be a regular starter? no. but he still offers the squad something.
eto'o on the other hand is a perfect short term signing. a genuinely top class striking brain that still works the way it always did. I think jose has managed them both brilliantly and they've both contributed to our most consistent season since we won the title.
