I've just been bought a book: "Chelsea On This Day".

It basically has an entry for every day of the calendar. I thought I'd share this one, as it made me chuckle. It also shows, a bit, how football was, before the modern era. I quote:

"Sunday 12 April 1874.

Willie 'Fatty' Foulke, Chelsea's first ever goalkeeper, is born in Dawley, Shropshire. He cost the blues £50 from Sheffield United and was also made captain. A big character and figure - weighing more than 22 stone - Foulke joined Blues on the formation of the club in 1905 and played in 34 games in the first season. Tales included him walking off the pitch if he felt defenders weren't trying hard enough, and picking up opposing strikers and throwing them into his goal if they upset him.....

.....(Before Chelsea) One story has him leaving his dressing room naked post-match and chasing 1902 (FA Cup) final referee Tom Kirkham into a broom cupboard with governing body officials dissuading him from wrenching its doors off its hinges. He was disputing Southampton's equaliser which took (Sheffield) United to a replay "
