Chelsea New 442 offense

Featured Replies

I wrote a thread last season comparing our offense to city offense. However this season since spurs game,we have played in 4222/442 hybrid.

I will use our game vs soton to give a snippet of our new system.

This is a very clear picture of our new build up shape. (41 or 42) which is different to last year 32/31 setup

One thing that is interesting in the 1st picture are Mount, Jorgi, Ruben and ziyech position. All of them are in their natural position. Mount is between the line, Ziyech on the right wing, Jorgi is picking the ball deep and Ruben is higher than Jorgi.

Once the ball move to the final 3rd. We attack in classic 4222Screenshot_20220903-144707_YouTube.thumb.jpg.da2f26d8e10e3c1b48aa5287d3a370ef.jpg

Is this formation better or worse than last season? I think we have to give it more time but it is more "offensive". More importantly, this formation suit different player. Ziyech and Ruben are natural in those hybrid wb/am role. I also can see Borja play better in this formation than as lone 9 and I can say the same thing for our new no 9 and funnily enough rom will also be good also in this system. Offensively there is not much change in Jorgi role offensively but it is quite clear defensively so far he has been more exposed.
