Ellie Carpenter: Chelsea sign Australia defender

Women's Super League champions Chelsea sign Australia defender Ellie Carpenter from Lyon on a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee.

Pretty much a straight swap for Ashley Lawrence.

Carpenter broke on to the scene as a teenager, she was just 15 when she debuted for club and country. By 17 she was one of the best players in the country.

She is a brilliant defender with boundless energy but her attacking game needs refinement. Genuinely capable of shutting down any attacker in the world but then sending a cross into Row Z on the counter-attack, and much like a few in our squad already, is prone to being baited by the opposition.
