Kean spent his playing career at Celtic and Academica Coimbra. In June 2008, it was reported that Kean was in talks with Chelsea to become assistant coach to Luiz Felipe Scolari. Kean's fluency in Portuguese from his playing days is widely believed to be a key reason for Chelsea's interest.

Steve Kean, Coventry City's assistant manager, says he has turned down an offer to join Luiz Felipe Scolari's coaching staff at Chelsea.

The Scot, who speaks Portuguese after spending a season playing for Coimbra in Portugal, said he was contacted by Scolari's representatives who asked him to join the Brazilian's coaching team at Stamford Bridge.

"There was contact made from someone acting on behalf of Mr Scolari," he said. "When the contact came in I let Ray Ranson, our chairman at Coventry, and Chris Coleman aware of it straight away."

But Kean says he is more than happy to stay at the Ricoh Arena and does not expect to move.

"I don't think so, because the chairman has stated that I've got a contract and I'm happy with the project we've got at Coventry."
