Bit of a weird one this week (17/02/79), due to the weather - heavy snow everywhere. Only three games on in the whole of England, and just five in Scotland

First up - Leicester v Newcastle, 2nd Division. Leicester's hot air balloon cover kept the match playable, but the pitch cut up something terrible as the game went on. Newcastle included Peter Withe, Alan Shoulder & Irving Nattrass, while Leicester had Dennis Rofe (pre-Chelsea), and a 16 year-old striker by the name of Buchanan - though he only looked about 12!

Second game, Scottish Premier League, Morton v Partick Thistle. Decent goal from a free-kick in this game, and a fair old crowd, considering.

Third game, a Pathe Newsreel of the 1953 FA Cup Final between Blackpool and Bolton Wanderers at Wembley, complete with Harry Enfield style commentary. This was forever after known as the Matthews Final, which must have pissed off Stan Mortenson, as he scored a hat-trick! Mortenson was a really nice bloke, I met him when I was on holiday as a kid at Pontins in Morecambe and he was doing football coaching for all the lads in the camp.

Last game, highlights of the 1976 European Champions Final, Czechoslovakia v West Germany in Belgrade, a great match which went to penalties. The Germans had Beckenbauer, Hoeness, Meier & Bonhof in their side, while the Czechs had Masny, and Viktor in goal - worth watching!

Can you imagine todays players. ie the likes of Ronaldo/Robben playing on those old pitches with those old boots and those old heavy balls, with those older more liberal ref's, and those older whack'em defenders?

I pay to see it
