Madrid: anyone going?

Have got our tickets for Atletico away so looking forward to visiting Madrid for the first time.

Anyone else from the Shedendforum going?

Since there are tickets still on sale it would appear that the interest in the foreign trips has waned hugely in the last couple of years.

But if anyone is going, it would be good to know if there is a pre-match drinking establishment where our fans will be meeting up?

Cheers

It's called The Recession, Wicksy. The worst one in our history apparently, or so they are saying on the telly.

We're waiting until we get the real Madrid, (see what I did there?), we'll all go to that one.

I thought you were boycotting the CL anyway. I seem to remember you posting that earlier. Apologies if I'm mixing you up with somebody else.

I don't think it's just down to the recession, though that's obviously a factor. I think the novelty factor of following the blues abroad has worn off and it's almost an irrelevent match as Chelsea are all but qualified already.

I'm going Wicksy. I've never been to Madrid either. There's a thread here which has more info on the stadium, etc. and although I'm not on Facebook myself, I understand there's a page on there called 'Chelsea in Madrid' with details of Pubs we'll be drinking in.

I am also going. :D ;)

I am looking forward to it as I see Real as a more commercial/touristy club and Atletico as a bit more gritty and down to earth with, probably, a better more hostile environment.

There may be a recession on but I was still able to get a flight out on Monday lunchtime, returning Wednesday evening and two nights in a hotel for just under £190. The club (Thomas Cook) are charging £210 with no nights in a hotel!

But I agree that the European away novelty is wearing off. One of the (few) beauties with the group stages is that by the end of August I know all of the dates for the three away games and am able to pick one or two to go to. The groups also offer the opportunity to visit teams/cities that you will rarely come across in the knock out stages.

IMHO for most people I know it is all down to the recession.

As you know Wicksy I have been to lots of euro away trips over the past decade, and was one the original members of the Euro Away Travel Club. I had four mates who were also in at the very beginning and four out of the five of us have given it up this season all due, in some part or other, to the recession. And the bloke who has stayed in won't be doing euro away trips anytime soon as he is a self-employed decorator who is struggling big-time for consistent, reasonably paid work.

You are not wrong. I don't like the UEFA CL. Well, to be more precise, I don't like UEFA. And though obviously I'd like to see us win it, (mainly to stick it up Platini, Galliard, Blatter etc and to tick it off the club's "To Do" list), I don't really care about it that much anymore given all the UEFA > Frisk > Enemies of Football > Ovrebo sh*te of the past few seasons. But I loved the euro aways for the whole experience, of which the football itself was only a very small part. And make no mistake, I do miss it. The travelling, the banter, the beer! I have had some absolutely fantastic times. But with money tight and work uncertain, paying for the season ticket had to be my top priority and I'm sure that's the same for many others as well. Gone are the days of travelling to Rosenberg and paying £9.70 for a beer! At least for now.

And let just add, I hope you, and all those that can go, have a truly brilliant trip and support our lads to the max. I wish I was going with you.

Cheers Blue tone & Magoo.

We managed to get cheap flights too, around £90 with BA, and are staying 3 nights from Sunday to Wednesday. I have Spanish friends who have said that Madrid is a fantastic city, so I'm really looking forward to the trip.

I'll check out that link for advice on where to drink pre-match.

Yeah I know you used to go on most away trips (far more than I did) so it's a shame that you aren't going to this one, but I hope we'll have another opportunity to go to Madrid for the final. Like you say, what I love about the away trips is the banter, beer and opportunity to see new places, combined with seeing Chelsea abroad which gives me a real buzz. I have great memories of Milan, Lazio (4-0), Seville, Barcelona etc and hope there'll be a few more to come.

I truly sympathise with those suffering in the recession and hope it'll be short-lived and you'll be travelling regularly in the near future (should you ever forgive the corrupt UEFA scumbags that is...)
