Having connectivity problems

Featured Replies

OK let me try and explain this.

I got a 'new' laptop (I say 'new' because it is my old one form work rather than a new one). Now it was provided stripped of everything so I had to install all new drivers XP up to SP3 etc etc.

The problem I am having is one of connectivity. I can get it to recognise the wireless network in the house and can connect fine through that however I also want to be able to connect by hard wiring the laptop via an ethernet cable into the router.

For some reason this won't work. If I hard wire it in and disconnect the wireless network I lose connectivity. Also if I then reconnect the wireless network I still can't get on the net until I disconnect the ethernet cable.

I did, for a few hours, manage to get online via the ethernet cable last night but when I tried again today I am getting the problem described above.

When I plug the ethernet cable in there is no flashing green light at the back of the laptop to suggest I am connected.

It beats me totally.

have you updated the drivers for the ethernet adapter? i would try that first. sounds like it could also

be a problem in your router settings. check to see if its connected when plugged in by checking the router status maybe.
