was that some of the dead wood that neal got rid of then ? And there were a few at the time.

Fillery left the summer of the great turnaround, when we brought in Nevin, Dixon, Spackman, McLaughlin and, er, Alan Hudson and Derek Johnston (Niedwiecki and Joey Jones came just before, I think, and Speedie the year before that)). I'm pretty sure Neal wanted to keep Fillery, even though there were big doubts about his attitude, but he was a free agent and signed for QPR, with us getting about £150 grand in compensation (not much less than we spent on Dixon, so not a bad deal for us).

I've often wondered if he'd have fitted into John Neal's rebuilt team, which relied on battling, energetic midfielders (Bumstead, Spackman and Thomas) getting the ball to our unstoppable front three as quickly as possible. Fillery was a cultured, creative player who could be brilliant but he wasn't a battler, and he'd probably have ended up a fringe player like Clive Walker did.

it was a question not an analysis !! Good player and somed great goals and took some games by the scruff of the neck and dominated the midfield ie Southampton at home in the league cup, but just a bit too inconsistent, that is my analysis
