Fan/Player interaction during a game.....

Featured Replies

Following on from a previous post it got me thinking about the craic or slagging that used to go on between us and the players during a game.

The "lets all do a seaman" from MHL after being lobbed by Nayim is a perfect example , he took it on the chin. Great banter. Peckham Blue was saying about Merson having the craic. Maybe it was an assnail thing but Wrighty was always good for it as well.

Southampton away , we got Dave Beasant looking for a fiver blowing around the penalty box again during the game. I'm sure something similar happened with Luca but he thought we were taking the piss. Paul Ince giving us the w**ker sign but hiding it after getting a shedload of abuse.

I know there was lots more I just can't think of them yet. Any stories ?

I

m sure that Mike summerbee once mouthed "w**kers" at the chelsea fans after a rendition of the old song

LEE BUMS BELL

BELL BUMS LEE

LEE N BELL BUM SUMERBEE....................Although i could have mistaken that for him saying "Thanks"..lol

Id like to add tho that where fan interaction with players is concerned i believe given the chance David Luiz and the fans can be a bloody good bond..Hes nuts and he regularly gives an arm gesticulation to Blues fans when he wants to..To spur us on or celebrate..With a bit of encouragement i believe he can be the Shed boy on the pitch

Peter Osgood had a great rapport with Chelsea fans thoughout his career, even after he left. He also had a rapport with opposition fans, and became quite adept at giving them the 'w**kers' sign whenever they gave him abuse. When Ossie scored at the Shed end, he'd often run round behind the goal to celebrate with the fans - and who can forget that celebration in the back of the net after he scored a fluky goal against Man.Utd in 1973, where he dropped to his knees, smiled, and spread his arms in mock embarrassment.

I remember our centre-half David Webb having to play an entire game in goal at home to Ipswich due to keeper injuries. Just before the kickoff he got on his knees and said a prayer, really funny and got a huge cheer from the Shed. Webby was one hell of a character!

Joey Jones always came over to us Chelsea fans and wave his fist, urging us to sing and fight for the Blues, especially at away games. Loved him for it!

There were many incidents involving Dennis Wise, best I remember is when he had the ball in midfield at the Bridge and didn't realise an opponent was rushing in from behind. It seemed the entire Chelsea support yelled "man on!!!", and Wisey quickly passed the ball before he was caught in possession - then he looked round the ground with his cheeky grin, and raised his thumb to thank us!

Lots of Chelsea players had a good rapport with the fans, Micky Droy, David Speedie, Micky Thomas, Luca Vialli to name but a few, maybe someone else could recall some anecdotes?

Wasn't just the players, either. In the 70's there was a short fat ginger ref who was bald on top called Roger Kirkpatrick - great ref, and one hell of a character, a really funny guy. One match at the Bridge someone threw an apple on the pitch from the Benches, Kirkpatrick mock-glared at the crowd, picked up the apple, took a bite and then put the apple in his pocket, laughing as he did so.

The funniest was at Villa Park for the '96 FA cup semi, Paul Parker was warming up in front of the Chelsea fans and was getting dogs abuse, everything from that we were all shagging his wife to the fact that he was sh*t!

Then 1 guy shouts out "I was shagging your Mrs this morning" to which Parker just smiled and winked, then the same voice shouts out "I know where you live" again Parker took it all in his stride, but when the guy then reeled off Parkers address, the look on his face was priceless!

How he did as a goalkeeper?

I remember a huge cheeky smile from David Webb to fans when he scored a goal at the Bridge against IPSWICH that never went in..It hit the side netting and bounced out and declared a goal..At least, i think thats wot i remembered

How he did as a goalkeeper?

He kept a clean sheet! We beat Ipswich 2-0, and to be fair Ipswich didn't trouble our defence much that day - and when they did, Webby made damn sure the defence protected him! As you may imagine, Webby got a huge cheer whenever he touched the ball, even from a pass back

Dave Webb seemed to love playing against Ipswich, he scored a hat-trick against them once at Portman Road!

And Drake is right, Alan Hudson scored the famous goal that never was. I was standing in the North Stand end that day right behind the goal, and nobody could believe that the ref gave the goal, diabolical decision but at least it went in our favour.
