Chelsea FC 2024/25 Season Review Question Sheet

General Season Reflections

  • How would you rate the season overall?

C: Whilst qualifying for the Champions League and winning the UEFA Conference League ticked the minimum (and expected) boxes, the overall campaign was underwhelming. Performances in domestic cups were poor. A prolonged mid-season slump exposed tactical rigidity and questionable player selection. Enzo Maresca showed limited evidence of tactical progression, often deploying players out of position and prioritising slow, risk-averse football that stifled attacking intent. The season was only partially redeemed by an unexpected triumph in the Club World Cup, which masked deeper systemic issues rather than resolving them.

  • How do you rate the Maresca's performance?

D: He achieved the bare minimum - Champions League qualification and the conf league were expected. top 4 finish came with a struggle and a strong sense of fortune rather than merit (reliant on others results). There is also a lingering impression that the early stability was built on the foundations laid by Pochettino. Once Maresca’s own tactical fingerprints appeared - they often made the team worse: slowing tempo, over-complicating buildup, and misusing personnel. His football was frequently negative and risk-averse, and any late-season uplift felt reactive rather than planned. The trophies masked deeper issues rather than vindicating his approach.

Player Performances

  • Best player (your player of the season): Caicedo. Mr Consistent.

  • Worst player: Jackson. Quite simply the worst Chelsea player I have had the misfortune of seeing, and a dreadful human being. He almost cost us the UCL and CWC with his mad indiscipline

  • Best surprise: Cucurella - turned it around and proved people wrong

  • Worst disappointment: Lavia and Fofana - always injured.

  • Breakout star: Trev - he proved he can do a bloody good job for us, and I am so happy he finally feels like he has proved himself.

  • Most improved player: Cucurella.

  • Which player deserved more game time this season? So many. Chukwuemeka, Josh, Nkunku and Felix would have all got more time had I been manager.

Memorable Moments

  • Best moment: The Club world cup final

  • Worst moment: The fact that Maresca kept selecting the Donkey.

Transfers and Youth Team (see arivals/departures as per TransferMarkt below if you want a reference)

  • How would you rate Chelsea’s transfer business overall? (Score between A and F, with a brief explanation): D

  • Which was the best transfer of the season? Tosin. Free and at times our best defender.

  • Which was the worst transfer of the season? (Name and why): Jorgensen or Felix or Kellyman. To spend that much money on a GK and have him be worse than Sanchez is hard. Felix was just an odd deal (as much as I like him as a player). Kellyman was money laundering.

  • Which transfer do you think we haven’t seen the best of yet? Guiu.... I love his energy and really want him to get some experience.

  • Which youth academy player showed the most promise for the first team? Trev. Simply class .

General Season Reflections

  • How would you rate the season overall? C. Overall we won what was expected of us during the normal season and it gives us a good platform to build on for next season. The CWC win was unexpected and deserves credit for beating the PSG super team with such ease. Its hard to imagine we would have got so far had we not lost in the group stage and had the easiest run possible to the final. I think we should have had top 4 secured a lot earlier, but its good to have CL back at the Bridge. The domestic cups were a big disappointment, and i'd like to see us win the FA cup this year.

  • How do you rate the Maresca's performance? C. I'm in two minds how to rate this as we've seen two different Maresca's this season. He showed he could do it up until November, then completely sh*t the bed until March. The squad is good enough, however next season will show if we are limited by the manager.

Player Performances

  • Best player Caicedo. World class every game.

  • Worst player: Malo Gusto. Not really a fault of his own but more the job he was tasked with.

  • Best surprise: Chalobah. Not sure its really a surprise as i've been advocating it since 2022, but he's filled the gap left once again by Fofana with no real drop off in quality.

  • Worst disappointment: Malo Gusto. See previous comment.

  • Breakout star: Tyrique George. Probably started our turn around with the goal against Fulham.

  • Most improved player: Cucurella. Gone from being a huge liability to one of the first names on the team sheet, long may it continue.

  • Which player deserved more game time this season? Guiu. Obviously the injury didn't help, but should have had more minutes before that with Jackson doing next to nothing since xmas.

Memorable Moments

  • Best moment: 4-3 win over Tottenham. Never felt like we'd lose and god we were fun to watch at that point.

  • Worst moment: Either game against Ipswich.

Transfers and Youth Team (see arivals/departures as per TransferMarkt below if you want a reference)

  • How would you rate Chelsea’s transfer business overall? D. We spent 281M and i'm hard pressed to see anyone who starts for us this coming season. We went into another season without a striker or goalkeeper, despite the glaring issues from the year before. We balanced the books with a lot of Cobham sales but i think this summers window has been great so far.

  • Which was the best transfer of the season? Tosin. Adds leadership to the dressing room which was needed.

  • Which was the worst transfer of the season? Joao Felix. I don't need to explain.

  • Which transfer do you think we haven’t seen the best of yet? Anselmino. Excited to see what he can bring in a year or two.

  • Which youth academy player showed the most promise for the first team? Reggie Walsh. If only it had gone in...

Player Ratings

  • Below is a list of Chelsea players who played 5 or more competitive matches in the 2024/25 season (I didn't include Delap and Pedro as they just joined). Rate each player’s performance on a scale of 0-5 stars (0 = poor, 5 = outstanding). Feel free to add comments for standout or underwhelming performances.

    • Goalkeepers:

      • Robert Sánchez: 1.5/5. Credit for the CWC, but you were god awful this season. Blame probably lies with the manager more than him.

      • Filip Jørgensen: 2/5. great game against Heidenheim, pretty average in the rest. Not sure why we signed him really.

    • Defenders:

      • Josh Acheampong: 3.5/5. Looked great every time he played, hopefully see a lot more of him next season.

      • Tosin Adarabioyo: 3/5. Steady player. Not going to set the world on fire but good signing and overall good performances.

      • Benoît Badiashile: 0/5/ Honestly can't remember him playing this season.

      • Trevoh Chalobah: 4/5. Love you Trev x

      • Levi Colwill: 3.5/5. Improved as the season went on and cut out all the pathetic diving. Ended the season as a real leader and puts himself about now.

      • Marc Cucurella: 4.5/5. Probably Maresca's biggest achievement with the squad, well done Cucu.

      • Axel Disasi: 0/5. See Badiashile comment.

      • Wesley Fofana: 1/5. Availability is the best ability. Lets hope the surgery has fixed him and a proper rest this summer will have him fit by the end of next season, because he's a great player when available.

      • Malo Gusto: 0.5/5. Gave him half a point for the CWC final.

      • Reece James: 3/5. 32 games out of him this season, the most since 21/22. Best RB in the world.

    • Midfielders:

      • Moisés Caicedo: 5/5. World class.

      • Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall: 2.5/5. Did well with that games he was given, but realistically isn't Chelsea quality. Don't mind him sticking around for depth.

      • Enzo Fernández: 3.5/5. Needs to play in the 10 if he's playing. Love his passion.

      • Roméo Lavia: 0/5. See Fofana comment.

    • Forwards:

      • João Félix: 0/5. One of our worst signings in recent history.

      • Tyrique George: 3/5. Jury is out on if he'll ever be Chelsea quality but he did well with the minutes he was given last season.

      • Marc Guiu: 2/5. Showed promise but limited minutes with the injury, hope to see more next season.

      • Nicolas Jackson: 1/5. Starter the season like a man on fire but since Xmas its hard to really call him a footballer. Almost cost us top 4 with his red card then the red in the CWC. Hopefully sold this summer.

      • Noni Madueke: 2/5 Mid table level winger, didn't maximise his output from the chances he got.

      • Shumaira Mheuka: 0/5. Can't even remember him playing other than 45 minutes in the conference league.

      • Mykhailo Mudryk: 0/5 Looked good at the start of the season, but is banned so means nothing now.

      • Pedro Neto: 2/5. See Madueke comment.

      • Christopher Nkunku: 1/5. Lazy, uninterested, weak.

      • Cole Palmer: 4/5. See Caicedo comment. I think he was stunted by the manager being forced through the middle, lets hope the CWC final has opened some eyes.

      • Jadon Sancho: 2/5. See Madueke comment.

General Season Reflections

  • How would you rate the season overall?
C+ - Started well, dropped off terribly in the middle, rescued it toward the end and always nice to life one expected and one unexpected bit of silverware

  • How do you rate the Maresca's performance?
D - Can’t argue with what he did in the CWC and the adjustment he made in the ECL but that December-March run was the worst I’ve ever seen Chelsea perform in the last 2 decades. The football was turgid at best, mainly down to his insistence on the ‘system’. Hope for some more adaptability this upcoming season.

Player Performances

  • Best player: Moises Caicedo

  • Worst player: Benoit Badiashille

  • Best surprise: Jadon Sancho

  • Worst disappointment: Christopher Nkunku

  • Breakout star: Trevor Chalobah

  • Most improved player: Marc Cucurella

  • Which player deserved more game time this season? Josh Acheampong

Memorable Moments

  • Best moment: The 4-3 against Sp*rs still makes me laugh.

  • Worst moment: Dropping points in both fixtures to Ipswich Town is unforgivable.

Transfers and Youth Team

  • How would you rate Chelsea’s transfer business overall?
B - We’ve got a potentially World Class core and have recruited some of the most promising youngsters in world football.

  • Which was the best transfer of the season?
Tosin - He’s a locker room leader, which this young group was dying for and he didn’t cost a penny.

  • Which was the worst transfer of the season?
Joao Felix - Definition of a luxury player and a huge expense just to register the PSR PROFIT for Gallagher.

  • Which transfer do you think we haven’t seen the best of yet?
Marc Guiu - It won’t be for a few seasons (and loans) but there is a proper player in there.

  • Which youth academy player showed the most promise for the first team?
Josh Acheampong - If he’d signed the contract earlier, he’d of seen 10x more game time.

Player Ratings

    • Goalkeepers:

      • Robert Sánchez: 3.5

      • Filip Jørgensen: 2.5

    • Forwards:

      • João Félix: 0

      • Tyrique George: 2

      • Marc Guiu: 2

      • Nicolas Jackson: 0

      • Noni Madueke: 2

      • Shumaira Mheuka: NA

      • Mykhailo Mudryk: NA

      • Pedro Neto: 3

      • Christopher Nkunku: 1

      • Cole Palmer: 4.5

      • Jadon Sancho: 3.5

Final Thoughts

  • Any other thoughts on Chelsea’s season?
Missed opportunity. Should’ve done more in both domestic cup competitions and a lack of authority really slowed down what should’ve been a PL challenge with a more flexible/experienced manager. Nicholas Jackson is not a footballer.
