Avram Grant training tirade lifts Chelsea

With an important game looming against Arsenal - Chelsea's four-year home record clearly under-threat - Grant spent 20 minutes tearing into his well-paid players at the club's training ground last Friday.

According to the Daily Star, the Israeli left many of Chelsea's players stunned at the tirade as he told his side to stop blaming others when things failed to go to plan.

And after losing the lead three times at White Hart Lane in a thrilling Premier League match, Grant's tactics clearly worked at the training ground as Chelsea overtook Arsenal into second place.

A Chelsea source said: "You could hear a pin drop when Avram kicked off – everyone just sat there stunned."

"He's adopted a pretty much softly softly approach since taking over and maybe a few of the players had started to become a bit complacent.

"But he was clearly fed up with things and said he could baby-sit the players no more and that it was time they started taking responsibility for things themselves.

"There may have been some in the squad who doubted whether he had the bottle or the backbone for the job but after that blast they are in no doubts he means business now."

The source added: "He said he felt there were some who were happy to hide behind others or excuses when things went wrong, but everyone should be in it together in good times and the bad."
