Chelsea assistant boss Henk ten Cate admits the club have been left 'devastated' by their UEFA Champions League penalty shoot-out defeat to Manchester United.

John Terry missed the chance to win the trophy for Chelsea as he hit the post from the spot, which then allowed United back in and Edwin van der Sar saved Nicolas Anelka's effort to win it for Sir Alex Ferguson's side.

Ten Cate felt Chelsea deserved to win, and feels they were the better side for most of the game.

"We were devastated to lose it like that," said Ten Cate.

"I thought that in the second half and extra-time that we were the better side.

"We had some good chances and were very unlucky. We hit the post and the crossbar but penalties are a lottery and we got the short straw.

"The players have done a fantastic job this year.

"Especially if you look at the many critics they had, the manager especially.

"The players had to cope with it every day and to come so far, and be better over the 120 minutes against one of the best teams in the world, means that everyone at Chelsea can be proud."

Ten Cate revealed that Terry was not down in their initial list of five - but he was promoted up the order.

"It was unbelievable," said Ten Cate. "He just slipped. We practiced penalties in training last week and he was so confident - he took them all very well.

"So we were pretty confident. He was not in the first five but when it comes to take them, somebody might say 'I don't feel well, I prefer somebody else take it'."

that reads indirectly blaming drogba?

We all feel that way don't we? I'm not surprised that JT took the pen, it was just bad luck that he slipped. Re the general penalty shootout thing - I remember us losing in the Inter Cities Fairs Cup ON THE TOSS OF A COIN! Can't remember who against, could delve into my programme collection or Google it but can't be arsed today.

COME ON YOU BLUES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Saw Ten Cate as a guest on the Spanish Football on Sky last weekend. It was quite interesting to hear him talk as he hasn't really said too much publicly since his arrival. I thought he came over pretty well.
