POST-SEASON BRIEFING: STATISTICAL SUMMARY FOR SEASON 2007/8

In many ways this was a campaign of considerable turmoil. The club parted company with the most successful manager in its history soon into the season, long-term injuries ruled out several key players, and there was the disruption of the Africa Cup of Nations after the turn of the year. Amazingly, Chelsea players were unavailable 286 times over the 62-game season because of injury, suspension, international duty or other absences.

All of which make the achievements of the coaching staff and the extended squad all the more extraordinary. They competed in two cup finals, and lost out on penalties in the European Cup and by just two points to supposedly the greatest team Sir Alex Ferguson has ever assembled.

What might this astonishing Chelsea team have achieved with a little more stability?

A dubious penalty awarded at Wembley, a poorly defended cross at Barnsley, lax play that allowed an Emile Heskey equaliser, and a penalty slip in the wet of Moscow were harsh lessons for the club that the margin of error between winning and losing football's prizes is so slight - as it was when even when we were winning them.

It was a campaign of low-key but substantial achievement, of constant pressure and sneaking up on the rails, but nothing to show for it. Bizarrely, not one Blues player was selected for the PFA Premier League team of the year after a sustained challenge in every competition.

Never the less milestones were achieved that set this Chelsea team in its proper historic place. Yet even when the proud home league unbeaten run was extended beyond Liverpool's previous record, in the first game of the season, there was something strange about the 3-2 win against Birmingham.

In hindsight it was the harbinger of an unaccustomed vulnerability in Chelsea's defence that occasionally cost dear. What that game didn't foretell was the lack of clear-cut chances in front of goal that was evident throughout the trophy chase. The most common scoreline in the league was a 1-0 win - it occurred in nearly one in four matches.

The tight margins meant late equalisers brought anguish at Spurs, and home to Everton, Wigan and Bolton, when a more comfortable lead would often have reflected Chelsea's earlier dominance.

Sixty five league goals is several fewer than in the title-winning seasons 2004-6 (both 72), but actually one more than the total managed in 2006/7. The team conceded twice more this season - 26 - than last year, though, so the goal difference is one worse: 39.

The argument that protecting against a Stamford Bridge defeat might be playing on minds - the crowd's included - is reinforced by statistics. Chelsea drew 37% of Premier League meetings at the Bridge.

Our league success was built away from Fulham Road. Chelsea won two-thirds of away games and boasted easily the best record among Europe's most competitive leagues. Our win percentage of 68% was five better than Spain's toughest tourists, Villareal, nine better than Bayern Munich in Germany and a whole fifteen better than Inter, the best in Italy. We have the highest UEFA ranking going into next season's Champions League.

Of course, since the Champions League final was lost on penalties, the match counts as another draw, Fenerbahçe representing the last loss in any game.

And that means that whoever takes over as Chelsea manager next season, they will go in on the back of a ten-match unbeaten run in all competitions, and 21 in the league alone.

Plenty to build on there. But room for improvement too.
