Could be wrong but I think PVA will be 21 when the squad is submitted on September 1st.

Not sure if that would then make him a HG.

Or has he gone out on loan and it's all incidental anyway?

According to the premier league site, "an Under 21 player is defined as one who is under the age of 21 on 1st January in the year in which the season commences." .

You're right that he will count as home-grown next season onwards.

Both him and Bertrand are still here, so I'm not quite sure what the club have in plan.

Thanks for clearing that up. PVA is an U21 player this term. It's official.

It would be daft to keep both in the squad, so surely one is going on loan.

Bertrand is a HG, of which we have six and possibly seven depending on the Rajkovic situation.

We are allowed eight, so I don't think there's any need to dispense with Bertrand on that basis, unless the club are planning on a splurge on two or more English players in the next three weeks, which I can't see (would be happy to see Rodwell arrive, mind).

I suppose it will come down to which player AVB feels is most ready to do a job for us. I haven't seen enough of either to have an opinion. The club clearly feel they're both good prospects.

For me, it has to be Ryan who stays. He has been on loan for ages and played well so he earned his chance. Also he is more experienced and defends better, which is the main task of a left back. And while PVA has the advantage in attacking talent, Ryan also can cross the ball quite good.

I read last night PVA might be going on loan to Newcastle, this was denied on Chelsea TV - They are saying PVA will replace Zhircov in the squad
and Bertrand will be cover for Ashley Cole ?

So are we to take from that they see PVA more as a winger than a full back? I dont mind that, he does look very good going forward, fast and quit a decent cross on him.

But wasn't Zhirkov essentially Cole's backup?

I read the PVA -> Newcastle rumour somewhere and was going to mention it as a good move (assuming they sell josé enrique), but now I couldn't find it at all.

Even if we add Essien to the mix and assume Rajkovic is successful in his application and qualifies as a HG, we would still be able to sign one HG and one non-HG, as well as as many U21s as we like.

So come on people place your bets...

You can make three signings: one homegrown, one non-homegrown, and one U21, who are they?

Mine would be Modric (non-homegrown), Rodwell (U21) and a homegrown winger (Young would have been my choice but Walcott, Lennon and Johnson are up for grabs (or possibly not).

My home-grown choice would have been N'zogbia, but since he's gone, none of the viable options really excite me. I'll go with Scott Parker however.

The other two, Mario Götze(U-21) and Juan Mata(non HG) are pretty straightforward choices.

All things considered, availability, FFP etc, I'd say: Scott Parker (HG) for the cold nights away in December, Miralem Pjanic (U21 just qualifies as he turned 21 in April), an assists machine who wouldn't hinder Josh as much as Modric,  and a curveball in Jefferson Farfan from Schalke (non HG), in the last year of his contract and a cheapish option to improve the right wing options in the squad. Takes a decent free kick with either foot as well.

Christian Eriksen U21
Adam Johnson Homegrown
Wesley Sneijder Non Homegrown

Hazard, Nasri, Rodwell  and for different reasons Van Der Weil would also be on my radar
should my negotiating tactics be as dodgy as Gourlay's!

Probably Hazard for U21, Johnson for homegrown (hard to find homegrown players at the positions we need), Van der Weil or Inkoom for non-homegrown. Really, any of the U21s people have mentioned so far would be great.

Can we register Homegrown U21 players to fill the HG quota even though U21s dont have to be registered, Josh for example? I think I remember this could be done on Football Manager which is usually pretty accurate.

This is the 25 man squad I'd hope to see come the end of the transfer window:

GK:

Cech
Hilario
Turnbull (HG)

DF:

Cole (HG)
Bertrand (HG) - U21?
Terry (HG)
Luiz
Ivanovic
Alex
Chalobah (HG/U21)
Bosingwa

MF:

Mikel
Lampard (HG)
McEachran (HG/U21)
Ramires
Essien (Not Registered till Jan)
Romeu (U21)
Modric

AMF:

Malouda
Mata
Sturridge (HG)

ST:

Drogba
Torres
Lakuku (U21)
Anelka

Which means Ferreria, Benayoun and Kalou out. Yossi probably to Spurs in the Modric deal. Ferreria and Kalou sold on elsewhere if possible.

Its easy to say these three players out but you have to get someone to buy them. Unless the club let them go for nothing but then the club would have to buy out the rest of their contracts. I can see Kalou still here this season.

Yes, but it would be pointless. The home-grown quota doesn't necessarily need to be filled.

Really? I always thought it was a way of forcing teams to sign HG players. Why is it not enforced?

Because the emphasis is on a maximum number of non-home grown players rather than a minimum number of home grown players.
