What is a stand out pointer to Torres value to us as a player are the give him credit type posts in this thread, he had (measured by his performances to date here) a fairly good game yesterday in that he worked hard, he looked desperate to score (although against ten men with us hugely on top he still didn't) and he contributed well to some attacks while chasing the ball when we didn't have possession.
In itself that certainly isn't anything to complain about even though had he came on and had one of his many lesser performances we would still have come out worthy winners yesterday but that isn't what we need from a main striker here and doesn't make up for the games where he gos missing and effectively leaves us looking like a team playing with ten men.
I've been almost convinced four or five times here over the years that his form was on the up, early in the season there was a run of games where I thought he was our best option as his work rate and physical presence looked to me like it gave us more than we get from the other options...to be honest usually after a short run of being first choice I have wondered what I must have been thinking and now for me the most improved forward we have is Eto'o and I think he is by far the better option.
I would gladly have Eto'o here next season and think if we buy a big name and bring back Lukaku, Eto'o and Lukaku will be fighting for the chance to play second fiddle to the top man, from what I've seen of Lukaku (promising) I would think he and Eto'o will compete well for that spot.
Back to Torres, he plays his part and when he looks like he wants it it's hard to knock him and I can understand people jumping to his defense...he is a Chelsea player after all, the problem is that there are many games where he seems to hide away, to not make runs that even though he's having a bad day at least draw defenders away from our other players and on those days he deserves all the stick he gets, those days just stick in some peoples minds more than others.
