However if he is to leave then £20,000,000 is not an unreasonable fee. Conveniently what Chelsea have just pocketed while upgrading from Maresca to Alonso. Xhaka is 33; Thiago Silva was weeks short of his 36th birthday when he signed for Chelsea. I'd presume, with hindsight, few Chelsea supporters would think £20,000,000 wouldn't have been a bargain for him. I believe 2026-7 will be a very enjoyable and memorable one for Chelsea providing Alonso is given the signings he wants. Looking from afar I'd think a top striker would be near the top of his list. But right at the top and the foundation of your side for next season is Granit Xhaka. There isn't a single Sunderland supporter who won't be sorry to lose him whatever the fee. But if he's to go then I hope at least that your ridiculously profligate owners aren't going to be parsimonious just when the player in question will be worth a lot more than a third of a Mudryk.
