I happened to tune into ITV4 this afternoon and they had a re-run of Man City v Chels 21 Jan 1979! We won 3-2 with goals from Duncan McKenzie, Ossie and Clive Walker. Unbelievable stuff- the pitch was covered in snow, orange ball, players making and taking hefty challenges but running them off. The Cat made some brilliant saves.

Sadly I think we went down that season - Danny Blanchflower was the manager soon to be replaced I think by Geoff Hurst.

The team was I think (in no order)

The Cat

Chopper

Ossie

Graham Wilkins

Micky Droy

Steve Wicks

Tommy Langley

Garry Stanley

Duncan McKenzie

Clive Walker

I'm missing the left back, sorry

Bugger, I missed it! I've got a feeling I was at that match, but I can't be sure - all the seasons matches have got jumbled up in my mind over the years (and the oceans of beer I consumed in those days clearly doesn't help either!)

I think you'll find the left-back was David Stride

edit - just noticed that Big Match Revisited is on ITV4 tomorrow afternoon at 2:50 - gonna set my recorder, hope it's a repeat of the City game!

You are right BB, it was indeed David Stride. From what you can hear on the recording there were a fair few Chelsea boys up there. Kind of nostalgic to hear the other lot singing "You're going down again".

I came across it by accident as well and it was great to see some classic old football, legendary players and dodgy hairstyles - although not so much the yellow shirt/green shorts away kit...that was bad

I thought it was Norwich at first.

Got home from Cornwall yesterday to find that I'd recorded The Big Match OK, and indeed it was a re-run of the Man.City/Chelsea game. I love to watch our old games, so I was made up with it! Ossie still playing well, Micky Droy winning MOM - great stuff.

MB, I think you're being a little kind to the Blues there by saying we were average :D ...as you say, we were very lucky to win. When you think that game was played on 20 January - and it was only our third win of the season! In fact we only won twice more after that and finished bottom of the league.

Some of our results that season: -

Leeds (home) - lost 0-3

Man.City (home) - lost 1-4

Spuds (home) - lost 1-3

...and then Danny Blanchflower took over from Ken Shellito...

Middlesbro (away) - lost 2-7

Ipswich (away) - lost 1-5

Man.Utd (away) (FA Cup) - lost 0-3

Nottm.Forest (away) - lost 0-6 (some c*nt called Martin O'Neill scored a hat-trick)

Bristol City (away) - lost 1-3

Arsenal (away) - lost 2-5

And the worst thing about that lot is that I was at most of those games, still have nightmares about Boro & Forest! ;)

Never mind, it was still good to see the likes of Ossie, Flasher, Tommy Langley, Gary Stanley, Steve Wicks & Duncan McKenzie - even if it meant also seeing the likes of Graham Wilkins ;)

Bugger I got that all wrong - anyway I was going to say that I'd forgotten about Clive Walker's flashing incident. Schoolgirls I seem to remember?
