Champions League - group stages

Featured Replies

Only two games remain before the group stages are over and done with. Some teams are already through, some are out and some are fighting to stay in the tournament.

Let's have a look at the groups:

Group A (Team / points)

Bordeaux 10

Juventus 8

Bayern 4

Maccabi Haifa 0

Remaining games:

25/11 Bordeaux - Juventus

25/11 Bayern Munich - Maccabi Haifa

08/12 Juventus - Bayern Munich

08/12 Maccabi Haifa - Bordeaux

Bordeaux are through.

Question remains who will make them company into the knock out stages. If Juventus beat Bordeaux in France they will be through, even if Bayern beat Maccabi at home.

If Juve drop points there will be a very interesting game in the last round when Juventus face Bayern. A game that will decide which of them reach the knock out stages.

Maccabi are out.

Group B

Man. United 10

Wolfsburg 7

CSKA Moskva 4

BeÅŸiktaÅŸ 1

Remaining games:

25/11 CSKA Moskva - Wolfsburg

25/11 Man. United - Besiktas

08/12 Wolfsburg - Man. United

08/12 Besiktas - CSKA Moskva

ManU are through and Besiktas are out.

In the next round CSKA will play Wolfsburg in Russia. If Wolfsburg gets atleast one point they will knock CSKA out.

Group C

Milan 7

Real Madrid 7

Marseille 6

Zürich 3

Remaining games:

25/11 Real Madrid - Zürich

25/11 Milan - Marseille

08/12 Zürich - Milan

08/12 Marseille - Real Madrid

One of the really tight groups. Basically any team can make it. I think either Milan or Real Madrid will make it through, but Marseille might snatch one of the top positions as well.

Group D

Chelsea 10

Porto 9

Atlético 2

APOEL 1

Remaining games:

25/11 Porto - Chelsea

25/11 APOEL - Atlético

08/12 Chelsea - APOEL

08/12 Atlético - Porto

Chelsea are through! Porto as well. Atlético will have to try and secure the third place. I think they can make it. APOEL shouldn't be able to finish better than fourth.

Group E

Lyon 10

Fiorentina 9

Liverpool 4

Debrecen 0

Remaining games:

24/11 Debreceni - Liverpool

24/11 Fiorentina - Lyon

09/12 Liverpool - Fiorentina

09/12 Lyon - Debreceni

Lyon have reached the knock out stages. Liverpool have a slim chance if Lyon beats Fiorentina and Liverpool manage to win with more than 2 goals against Fiorentina in the last round. A very slim chance, but as much as I hate to say it, if any team is that lucky then it's Liverpool.

Debreceni will most likely end last.

Group F

Internazionale 6

Rubin 5

Barcelona 5

Dynamo 4

Remaining games:

24/11 Rubin Kazan - Dynamo Kiev

24/11 Barcelona - Inter

09/12 Inter - Rubin Kazan

09/12 Dynamo - Barcelona

Perhaps the closest group of them all. Many thought Barca and Inter would easily make it through, but Rubin and Dynamo has really made things difficult for them. Rubin getting 4 out of 6 points from Barcelona is very impressive.

I don't dare to predict the outcome here. No team will have an easy way, that's for sure. Will we see a surprise in this group?

Group G

Sevilla 10

Unirea Urziceni 5

Stuttgart 3

Rangers 2

Remaining games:

24/11 Rangers - Stuttgart

24/11 Unirea - Sevilla

09/12 Stuttgart - Unirea

09/12 Sevilla - Rangers

Sevilla have booked a place in the next round, but who will accompany them? Most probably didn't think Unirea had a chance in this group, but they might actually make it.

Rangers seem to be in trouble, but they still have a chance.

Group H

Arsenal 10

Olympiacos 6

Standard 4

AZ 2

Remaining games:

24/11 AZ Alkmaar - Olympiacos

24/11 Arsenal - Standard

09/12 Olympiacos - Arsenal

09/12 Standard - AZ Alkmaar

Arsenal needs only one point in the last two games to advance to the knock out stages. Standard knows they have to win against Arsenal in the next round to still be in the race. Olympiacos only need to beat AZ Alkmaar to be in the next stage of the tournament.

Teams who have advanced:

Bordeaux

Manchester United

Chelsea

Porto

Lyon

Sevilla

Who do you think will progress?

Groups C & F are the interesting ones. I expect Barca and Inter to go through but it has been a really tough group. I would bet on Milan and Madrid making through too but again it has been really tough for them.

The question is whether they have struggled because they aren't so good or because they have had genuinely difficult opposition. We wprobably won't know until the knockout stages begin.

I expect Barca and Inter to go through

I'm not so sure. If Inter and Rubin Kazan both win their fifth round game, both of them are through. I think that's a pretty realistic scenario.

I think it's a mix of both things.

I didn't watch the 2nd game between Rubin Kazan and Barcelona, but I've read about it and I caught some of the first game and I have to say that Rubin played really, really well. Their tactics was perfect (a bit like when we played Barca) and they scored on the opportunities they got. Two perfect games by them.

And in the 2nd game I think Barca suffered a bit from the cold. Atleast that's what I've heard.

Real Madrid seems like a team that can win one game 5-0 but struggle in the next. They seem to have done so in the Champions League so far and that can prove costly. And with Ronaldo injured they've lost one of the big stars.

As for Milan and Inter I would say that they aren't as good as some might think. Big teams, yes, and some great players, but they aren't the big teams one would expect. Inter started the season quite bad and they still have bad games. Luckily for them they have a couple of players you can bring on and they will always win the game for you.

Milan are quite bad in the league this season. I think they have started to play a bit better now, but it's not like they are a world class team at the moment.

I can't see inter winning at the camp nou. They got very lucky to be where they are now. Really donn't want barca to end up second in the group

But if Inter beat Barca and Rubin Kazan beat Dynamo then Barcelona will finish 3rd, which would be quite nice.

On the other hand they would probably move on and with the UEFA cup and then it wouldn't matter if we thrash all the opponents and win the final of the Champions League with the biggest score line ever in the history of football, we would still be considered far less than mighty Barca who won the prestigious UEFA Cup

If Rubin Kazan can beat Barca at Nou Camp, I don't see why Inter couldn't do the same. Inter and Barca have both been struggling a bit, so it can go either way. Barca are under pressure to perform, so it remains to be seen, but I don't think it's so far fetched to think that Inter could win at Nou Camp.

I don't think Barcelona have ever won the UEFA Cup and I seriously doubt that they ever will. :D

Barca and Liverpool, the teams that have been a thorn in Chelsea's flesh (if not individually then as a combination!) for the past so many seasons, both out of the knock out stages? Now that would most definitely be sweet.
