Posted July 28, 201014 yr So for the past week my internet has been very slow from times to times and its getting worse. Buffering videos from various sites takes absolutely ages now compared to before when it was running smoothly and I could buffer a 2hr movie rather quickly. Now I can't even get to buffer a 20 min one without having to wait for hrs. Sometimes when im on MSN it can disconnect me randomly and the web browser will just not load any pages like internet would of just switched off, its doing my head in as I've never had this problem before.. I cleared cache and everything to see if it would help me buffer videos any faster but nope it didn't. I deleted bittorrent in case I was sharing something and still nothing has got better. Im checking the taskbar of network and Network Usage is around 0%-1% with 58mbit/s speed. I am using wireless but as I said never had these problems until like a week ago.. Also ran a speed test and my download ended up at 6mb and upload 0.81mb. I have up to 24 mb connection at this moment. Need help!! Edited July 28, 201014 yr by AndyCFC
July 28, 201014 yr Try doing the speed test with an ethernet cable, instead of via wireless. If you still get a reduced speed, then you could be fairly confident that it's a problem with their end, not yours. Are you with Virgin or BT? With BT you can check their network status here. http://btbusiness.custhelp.com/app/service_status With Virgin, you can check it here. https://my.virginmedia.com/service-status/details If we still haven't got to what is going on, giving them a ring might be an idea.
July 28, 201014 yr Author Im with Swedish Bredbandsbolaget btw :) Ok so im now running on ethernet and actually got worse download 3.05 mb and upload 0.78mb... Done virus search and found one trojan that I removed but still the same old slow internet that wont buffer videos and that will randomly shut off and d/c me from MSN etc... *EDIT* Just ran the test again just to try it out and got about 5 mb now, still lower then wireless but the connection seem to be very unstable and switches a lot from being slow to fast loading pages etc, but not change on buffering vids :( *EDIT2* Ran it again and hit 7 mb download followed by 4 mb right after, well you get my point.. Sounds like problems on the line, more than problems with your end... to be sure you could use another computer to check, but yeah, if it's a problem their end, there is not much you can do.
July 28, 201014 yr Author Yeah it must be, done a full malware/virus scan and deleted them but still slow, could be someone using our wireless though considering we dont have a password on it. When I think about it I think these problems just started right after I downloaded Service Pack 1 for vista. Really have no clue though. Anyway, time for bed - will have to digg in to this later tomorrow.

Take the wireless aerial out, and stick with the ethernet. That'll mean that no one can steal your internet at that time, then do another test. That way you can see if anyone is stealing your bandwidth. I might well think of something else, but it's late.
July 29, 201014 yr Hi go to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/ they will find out whats up with your computer and its free?

Also, when you did the malware/virus sweep did you do it in safe mode?

July 29, 201014 yr Author Just to point out that this morning when I started it up the speed was almost back to normal, hit 10 mb on the test solid and I could buffer videos rather fast. It seem's to go slow at the afternoon/evening but we will see today, about to install Sp2 then run virus/malware test in safe mode.

Sounds to me like your on a loaded connection, the more users the slower your connection will be.
July 29, 201014 yr Author Yeah, thing is I only run my pc and the pc downstairs on it, and the xbox when it's on. These problems happens when the pc downstairs and xbox are turned off aswell so im suspecting some w**ker is leeching on my internet, I'll make sure to get it PW secured today and see how it runs.

Its maybe not that someone is leeching of it (though it could be that) but more the amount of users on your exchange which could slow it down.
July 29, 201014 yr Author Arghh Internet been working good all day until now, starts to slow down and laggs me out again. f**k sake what is the problem its driving me nutssssss!!

Ok, so sorted out a admin pw, a wpa pw to my router now and it's pw secured now. Only me using it now and usually this time it would be so slow but as I removed the leecher I can already say its back to normal. Buffering videos fast, no dcs from MSN etc. Problem solved.
