Richard Gough Relishing Legends Clash

RICHARD GOUGH reckons Rangers fans will be in for a treat today when the legends of Ibrox and Old Trafford go head to head – all for a great cause.

Tickets are still available for the 2pm Bank Holiday showdown – with a fantastic £40 family deal for two adults and two children.

Gough will skipper the Rangers Legends with heroes like Brian Laudrup, Jorg Albertz, Lorenzo Amoruso, Arthur Numan and Andy Goram all taking part.

Manchester United, bossed by the peerless Bryan Robson, will have Dwight Yorke, Denis Irwin, Quinton Fortune and Henning Berg in their ranks.

Gough said: “The last time we had an event like this was against AC Milan in March and that was terrific.

“I remember being in the tunnel with Franco Baresi and he said to me that something like that could never happen in Italy with 50,000 turning out.

“I had the pleasure of playing with a few players I hadn’t played with before like Arthur Numan, Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Michael Mols and they were all terrific on the night.

“Indeed it ended well for us as we managed to sneak a 1-0 win.

“I’m looking forward to today because when we all get together it brings back some great memories of when we played.

“I think Manchester United play a lot more football than our boys do so it will be tough, but it will be great.

“Of course a lot of the money will be going to the Rangers Charity Foundation and UNICEF so that’s great too.

“So hopefully as many people turn up as possible. The standard will still be good and if the AC Milan game is anything to go by it will be really competitive.â€

Among those turning out for Rangers will be present boss Ally McCoist, Brian Laudrup, Arthur Numan, Lorenzo Amoruso, Michael Mols, Jorg Albertz, Gordon Durie, Alex Rae and Marvin Andrews.

And Brian Laudrup will apparently be "desperate to score"

BRIAN LAUDRUP will be desperate to score against Manchester United on Monday if his old friend Andy Goram gets the chance to play for the Red Devils as well as Rangers.

The Goalie played for both clubs and has said – albeit with his tongue in cheek - he would like to spend 45 minutes between the posts for each side in the charity fixture at Ibrox.

Whether he gets the chance or not is another matter and the likelihood is home manager Walter Smith will want to keep Goram in his own team for the entire contest.

But Laudrup admits the chance to get one over one of his closest acquaintances from his time in Glasgow more than 15 years ago would be too much to resist if the opportunity arose.

He said: “I’ve been speaking to The Goalie recently and we are both looking forward to taking part in the match.

“It’s always the same when all the old boys get together. When meet up in the dressing room it’s like we have never been away.

“It will be great to take on a team such as Manchester United. They will have some top players in their side and they’ll give us a good game.

“It would be nice to have a chance of scoring against them if Andy goes in goal for them at any point – if I’m still on the pitch, that is!

“I’ll have to wait and see what kind of condition I am in because I’m maybe not as fit as I used to be.

“I still play five-a-sides so hopefully I shouldn’t be too bad and if Andy is in goals I will be looking to beat him. We have to score, it’s that simple.

“It was not that difficult in training all those years ago but I’m sure he’ll be doing his best to prevent that from happening again this time.

“The Goalie was fantastic for us last year when we played AC Milan, absolutely outstanding, so we’ll see what happens. I’m sure he’ll do well whoever he plays for.â€

Laudrup is coming back to Glasgow to play for the first time since his involvement in last year’s exhibition clash with AC Milan Glory.

Back then, it was the hosts who won 1-0 through manager Ally McCoist’s excellent second-half header from Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s cross.

A full house will be at Ibrox this weekend to see the Third Division trophy being presented after the final league match of the season against Berwick.

And after the festivities there, Laudrup believes Monday’s event will be the ideal way to wrap up a compelling 2012/13 campaign at the club.

He added: “It will be a special occasion and a good one for the fans after they see the Third Division trophy being presented to the club at the Berwick game on Saturday.

“All the players are looking forward to the match and I’m sure the fans who come along will enjoy it as well.

“Last year against Milan I felt I did okay. I’m not playing as much now as before but I’m still ticking over so I should be fine for the first half hour anyway, maybe a bit more.

“It will be a great occasion and especially because we will be raising money for the Rangers Charity Foundation and UNICEF, a very worthwhile cause.â€

Going today with my younger son , daughter (her first game) niece and nephew.

Nice one, hope you enjoyed. With over 20,000 turning up for a friendly, it looked a good day out. Two goals from Super Ally, a piledriver from Jorg Albertz and another from Alex Rae gave Rangers the win, Dwight Yorke having set up Ronny Johnsen to give Man U an early lead.

Nice to see a few old faces back on the pitch; Man of the Match deservedly went to Ally McCoist but Andy Goram in particular was also in fine form.

RFC Legends 4-1 MUFC Legends

ALLY McCOIST stole the show as only he can with an excellent double as Rangers Legends beat their Manchester United counterparts 4-1 at Ibrox.

In an enjoyable charity match, Ronny Johnsen put the visitors ahead with a well-worked goal in the early stages.

But the home side hit back through a trademark Jorg Albertz screamer, arguably one of the best strikes seen in Govan over the course of the 2012/13 season.

It would always take something special to beat that and, true to form, McCoist did what he does best with a second-half brace to win the game.

Alex Rae then completed the scoring late in the game with a good low effort that sneaked inside the far post.

The contest was watched by more than 20,000 fans, with proceeds going to the Rangers Charity Foundation and UNICEF.

Reading the team sheet before the game began was like scanning a who’s who of the most successful players in British football over the last 20 years.

Turning out for the hosts, star turns such as Brian Laudrup, Richard Gough, Andy Goram, Lorenzo Amoruso and Albertz all won so much in their spells at Ibrox.

United’s squad itself wasn’t bad either, with Denis Irwin, Raimond van der Gouw, Dwight Yorke, David May and Johnsen all involved in their 1999 Champions League win.

Less than two minutes into the contest, Novo very nearly had the perfect start as he had the first chance of the match.

Laudrup broke out of defence and had an opportunity to run at the defence and make an opening for himself.

Instead he threaded through for Novo, whose intentions were perhaps too obvious as he shaped and shot to the right corner only to see Raimond van der Gouw save.

The Spaniard did have the ball in the net moments later with a smart lobbed finish but this time it was after referee Euan Anderson’s offside whistle had already gone.

United were more patient in their approach but full of tricks and flicks, it was Yorke who set up their opener after 17 minutes.

Rangers failed to deal with a corner properly and the ex-Trinidad and Tobago striker’s backheel found Johnsen, who passed coolly into the net.

Alex Rae tried to get the teams back on level terms with a drilled shot from the edge of the area which sneaked just wide.

Johnsen then came close to grabbing his second with a header which looped over Goram and over the bar too.

All of that was the prelude for a stunning equaliser from Albertz, who lived up to his nickname by hammering home to make it 1-1.

He rifled home from 25 yards and although van der Gouw got a hand to his blistering effort, there was no chance he was keeping it out.

Albertz very nearly doubled his tally as the interval approached and another rapid attempt flew just over this time.

Novo also found himself in space again after beating two men but his finish was off the mark when he only had van der Gouw to beat.

Rangers had the best of the first period and it was the same after the break as Novo and McCoist, on as a substitute, both tried their luck but without success.

As we’ve all known for long enough, however, it’s rare that time passes by without the manager making some kind of impact.

And with a quarter of the match to go McCoist put Gers ahead with a good finish from 18 yards which looked like it took a slight deflection on the way past van der Gouw.

Novo should have added a third but with all the time in the world to think about it, he hit the target and – unfortunately for him – the keeper too.

Instead, it was McCoist who made it 3-1 as he pulled rank over Albertz when a free kick was given and his effort skidded off the surface low into the net from 25 yards.

Rae then sealed a deserved victory five minutes from the end for Walter Smith’s side, who could have won by more as they provided plenty of entertainment on their way to their success.

RANGERS: Goram; Konterman, Gough, Amoruso, Numan; Rae, McCall, Albertz; Novo, Mols, Laudrup.

SUBS: Andrews, Durie, Hateley, McCoist, Steven, McSwegan.

MANCHESTER UNITED: van der Gouw; Martin, Berg, Dublin, Irwin; Johnsen, Fortune, Sharpe; Yorke, Beardsley.

SUBS: Anderson, Thomas, May, Robson.

Enjoyable game, daughter met and got her pic takenwith Jorg Albertz.

Great seats in front of Copland Road Stand.

But Peter Beardsley a Man Utd Legend ?

1 game and no goals ? What is that about.. :face_palm: .

A Liverpool or Newcastlel (England ) legend I accept, but Man Utd ?

Lets face it he's only played 1 more game from them than myself...

Just a question for the Rangers guys on this site.

But with what regard is Gordon Durie held in with the Gers fans thesedays?.

Alan: He's held in high regard (as far as I' m aware) as he was a good player for Rangers.

I did wonder with what regard you guys thought about him, thanks mate for the reply.

From the picture he still looks well up for it though!.

From the picture he still looks well up for it though!.

He scores a hat-trick in the 1996 Scottish Cup Final V Hearts ,yet this feat was overshadowed by the World Class performance of Brian Laudrup.

Laudrup scored 2 and made all 3 of Durie's goals.

It's known as 'The Laudrup Cup Final'.
