Posted August 7, 20222 yr The season that felt like it would never end. We lost our owner, our European trophy, both domestic cup finals on penalties, our mardy centre-forward, and Tuchel's claims to having a combover. We did come away from it as World Champions for the first time though, so I suppose it's not all bad... New members of The Shed End may be unaware that in addition to dipping in every so often to make erudite and witty remarks, I also create the per-match MOTM threads, evaluate the stats, and provide this navel-gazing extension at the end of the season. Any veteran posters who are wondering why I've taken the unconventional step of not doing this until the following season had already started... with a new missus, new job, and (soon to be) new house, I've scarcely had time to maintain my low-level alcoholism, let alone spend a couple of hours trawling through a spreadsheet. Anyway, here are the numbers: Total number of games: 63 Total number of votes cast: 1615 Average number of votes per game: 25.63 Total number of players used: 32 Game with highest number of votes cast: Aston Villa (H PL) : 47 Game with lowest number of votes cast: Arsenal (H PL) : 9 Highest winning total: Kovačić vs Liverpool (H PL): 38 Lowest winning total: Hudson-Odoi vs Juventus (A CL); Jorginho vs Malmö (H CL) : 4 Unlike last season when we changed manager halfway through and drastically altered our lineup and style of play, there were no real fluctuations of any statistical interest, although the [very] early battle between Chalobah and Lukaku for first was interesting I suppose. If there was a dividing point in the season, it was probably Chilwell's injury in the outstanding 4-0 win at home against Juventus. The first third of the season (the fun bit) saw James, Mendy and Lukaku sharing almost half of the MOTM awards and 35% of the total votes between them; in the latter two-thirds (the endless bit) Silva and Mount were comfortably dominant and while the likes of Chalobah and Mendy fell away, we also saw lesser resurgences from Azpilicueta and Havertz, the latter suggesting that Leverkusen fan who said he only turns up after Christmas may have been onto something. Anyway, this is just the long way of saying that: Thiago Silva is The Shed End's 2021/22 Player of the Season. Yes indeed, the man who never won the Champions League and therefore also never won the Club World Cup (pictured above) won both the most MOTM awards and received the most individual votes. James and Mount were a close second and third respectively, but Silva's consistency through our troubled winter (and spring, and early summer come to think of it) edged him over the line. Via most MOTM awards: 1) Thiago Silva (8 awards) 2) Reece James (7 awards) 2) Mason Mount (7 awards) 4) Romelu Lukaku (5 awards) Via total votes: 1) Thiago Silva (162 votes) 2) Reece James (153 votes) 3) Mason Mount (142 votes) 4) Édouard Mendy (105 votes) Other stats (feel free to stop reading at any point): Premier League: All of Mount's 7 awards came in the league, which put him out in front. Mount's awards include both the 7-0 win against Norwich and the 6-0 win against Southampton. 3 of Mount's awards came against sides who were relegated; all bar one (the 3-2 defeat against West Ham) came against teams who finished 15th or below, proving once and for all that the virgins on Twitter with Jorginho avatars are the zenith of football wisdom. Mount is followed by Silva with 6, Lukaku and James with 4 each, then Mendy with 3. Champions League: Reece James was apparently our star performer with 2 MOTM awards: one for the 4-0 win against Juventus, and one for the quarter-final away leg against Real Madrid, arguably our two most impressive performances of the season. Lukaku, Hudson-Odoi, Jorginho, Loftus-Cheek, Werner, Silva, Azpilicueta and Havertz each got one. Domestic cups: Kepa leads the way in the League Cup with 2. He did get the award for the Tottenhm away semi, (although Mendy got the award for the final). Saúl (Tottenham home semi), James, Kanté, and Mendy each got 1. Even split in the FA Cup: Hall, Azpilicueta, Saúl, Silva, Werner (semi) and Alonso (final) got one each. Other: Alonso got MOTM for the Super Cup; Kepa for the Club World Cup semi, and Azpilicueta for the final. Here is the full table if anybody is interested: Thanks for reading!
