loz
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainmen ... 547347.stm Now tell me what is so depressing about these lyrics Oh mother, I can feel the soil falling over my headand as I climb into an empty bed oh well, enough said I know it's over still I cling I don't know where else I can go, mother Oh mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head see, the sea wants to take me the knife wants to slit me do you think you can help me? Sad veiled bride, please be happy handsome groom, give her room loud, loutish lover, treat her kindly although she needs you more than she loves you And I know it's over still I cling I don't know where else I can go it's over, it's over, it's over I know it's over and it never really began but in my heart it was so real and you even spoke to me and said: "If you're so funny then why are you on your own tonight? and if you're so clever then why are you on your own tonight? if you're so very entertaining then why are you on your own tonight? if you're so very good looking why do you sleep alone tonight? I know because tonight is just like any other night that's why you're on your own tonight with your triumphs and your charms while they are in each other's arms" It's so easy to laugh it's so easy to hate it takes strength to be gentle and kind it's over, over, over It's so easy to laugh it's so easy to hate it takes guts to be gentle and kind it's over, over, over Love is natural and real but not for you, my love not tonight my love love is natural and real but not for such as you and I, my love Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head aaargh the beauty of the melancholy song. So easily cast aside when times are good but so easily returned to when times are sh*tty! Like a great man once said A sad factor widely knownHow a most impassionate song To a lonely soul Is so easily outgrown But don't forget the songs That made you smile And the songs that made you cry When you lay in awe On the bedroom floor And said: "Oh smother me, Mother..." Lofty
Interesting wording for the topic Loz. The first thing I thought when I saw it was "he's having a laugh". Then I thought "No, he's taking the piss, almost to the extent of having a go". Well that's ok, but if you want to say something, I tell you what, why don't you just come right out and say it. I'll tell you a couple of things. I don't sleep very well these days. Mostly I sleep on my own. Because I choose to sleep on my own. I've chosen to do so most of the time since my wife died. And that's as far as I'm going with this because it's got f**kall to do with anybody here. By the way, I've never been into the Smiths.
loz
err case of wires crossed mate - it had nothing to do with you - 'lofty' is not exactly an uncommon phrase, I meant it entirely in the context of the word and not in any way in relation to you. bjd
Obviously im biased but despite a few clear expectations (2 on this thread) ive always thought its one of the biggest misconceptions in musical history that The Smiths are miserable and depressing - there are some lyrics i listen to that even now still make me laugh out loud. Perhaps some of the music might come across as plodding and bland but a lot of the lyrics are really, really positive, uplifting and amusing and ive found that over the years a lot of people who say otherwise are people who have no clue about Moz and The Smiths and because their music flies over their heads they just condemn it a student bedsit music etc runs
loz
You won't get any argument from me however it is pretty safe to say you already knew that! Going through school trying to persuade people I wasn't constantly on the verge of tying a bag over my head just because I listened to the Smiths was no easy task!! bjd
I cant put forward the same argument for Joy Division it has to be said...
loz
Very true - I took flack for Joy Division as well, turn the clock forward a short time and the dance floor is packed out with people dancing to Blue Monday and evry one of them claiming to have been into New Order since they were called Joy Division (although strangely their Joy Division vinyls seem remarkably new and unplayed!)
