I'm not particularly happy with the goings on of the past few weeks at Chelsea. Ever since we contracted Clattenburgitis, the mood has been one of negativity and depression. And the performances on the pitch have reflected that. I've always felt this was a transition season, involving significant player changes. You can't lose the likes of Drogba and Lampard, and to a certain extend JT, and not feel the consequences. We were lucky Hazard, Oscar and Mata have been playing well, or at least were playing well earlier in the season. But the change of personnel, and the subsequent needed change of style and squad dynamics, resulted in a much less defensively solid side. Even in the early season when we were getting the results, it was because we were scoring more goals than we were conceding. Lately, our goals have dried up, but our style is the same and we continue to concede goals. As such, results that would have been wins if we were scoring regularly became draws, and draws became defeats, and many more of this latter variety have been rearing their ugly heads of late, which is the main concern for the upper hierarchy. So, two things stand out: (1) our striker is not performing according to his responsibilities - Torres is not scoring and that is detrimental to our chances, an individual error, and (2) our team defense has gone to pot - this could be viewed as the manager's short-coming but could also be put down to a playing philosophy that has maybe been forced on him. Still, what to do? The owner has put a LOT of money into this club, and he has his expectations. So, we sack a club "hero" and a very down-to-earth and likable man. This has got to hurt for any Chelsea fan, as he is a face of our history. But this is a dog-eat-dog world, with cut-throat decisions made on a daily basis. I was disappointed, but certainly not shocked or surprised by the decision. The standard has been set, and we've seen this played out time and time again. As for Rafa? I of course share the many views that have been expressed about his "Liverpool-ness" and disliked him from the days of the ugly rivalry with my favorite Chelsea manager of all time, Jose Mourinho. So, of course, I also share the difficulty in warming to him. But, I have to ask my self: since when has a football club taken considered the views of the fans BEFORE those of the owner, or those of the business? I can't think of any. As fans, we are all emotional and find it difficult to forget. But for powers that be, it is a business, and they have to make decisions accordingly. The same goes for managers; well most, anyway. They do it for the money, partly, but also because they want a challenge. Like players, he will do the dance while he is here and speak nice words about the club and the fans, but one day he will be gone and will repeat the act somewhere else. This happens all the time with managers and players. Anything different is the exception. So, rather than actively protesting the appointment, which has no possible outcome other than heaping even more pressure on the manager and players to the detriment of the club and results on the pitch, I am of the opinion that we need to think of the big picture and give them the support they will need to turn our season around. Surely, we cannot want yet another sacking between now and the end of the season?! Cheers, Butch

For me, it is the league by a long shot. That is our bread and butter and is the means by which we make it into the Champions League. The glamor trophy may be the Champions League, but I don't even like it that non-champions participate in that competition. Coming to this season, I don't even think our chances in either competition is better than the other. We've already seen how well Shaktar are playing, and the way we are playing that trip to Turin is looking ominous. I'm still banking on us putting in a good performance now our backs are on the wall, but this is hardly a passage past the group stage to be confident about. We are only a couple of key players short of a league contender (maybe just one, a striker, and having JT and Ash back to organize the defense). Cheers, Butch

I think you make a lot of sense with your post. But I am also of the opinion the players did not perform on the day. We've had problems with defending since the start of the season, but we were outscoring our opponents and thus were getting wins. When the goals dry up, wins become draws and draws become losses when you continue to concede. With a competent striker, and JT back to organize the defense (for Luiz, not Cahill), we'd be back to looking like contenders for the league title. Cheers, Butch
