Dear Friends, As the new EPL season starts, so does the BPL competition. As long as there is one person interested, I will keep it going :-) To send in your predictions for each match, please follow the link: http://www.chelsea-fc.com/bpl.htm. You have until midnight BST the day before match day. Also, I am thinking of splitting the regular season standings for the different competitions (EPL, CL, FAC, etc...) and would like your thoughts on this. I get the feeling that sometimes these cup competitions (especially early round FAC and CC) tend not to have many predictors because people feel it will dilute their season averages. Cheers, Butch

First, I think RobbieD has shown himself to be a fan of the 4-2-3-1 formation. Whether we are offensive (home, chasing the game) or defensive (away, defending a lead) will likely be most apparent in the selection of the holding two and possibly the right back (i.e. more attacking or defensive players). I think AVB is putting this out in public at the behest of the club chairman who is (a) livid, and (b) trying to protect his image with the Spurs faithful by making Modric out to be the bad guy as much as possible so that when he does inevitably leave it will be with the blessing of the fans rather than the chairman taking heat for making Spurs a selling club. My feeling is that behind the scenes negotiations with the player have been made (or at least were started with great interest from the player/agent), but the sticking point is we just can't seem to come to an agreement with Porto. While they know they can't get the almost 100M EUR specified in the release clause, they are looking for nothing less than about half that, while Chelsea are looking at our options (Moses, Walcott, etc...), partly to force Porto's hand and partly as "due diligence". My opinion is that this deal could yet happen, but it is likely that this will run on for the best part of the transfer window. As for Oscar, I think almost everything is done, except for the signatures and the work permit, and maybe we are hoping the work permit issue may be aided by a good Olympics showing for the young Brazilian. I really like Modric. His ability on the ball and range of passing would be excellent in releasing the likes of Mata, Hazard and Torres. When Lamps is unavailable, he would be a PERFECT replacement. Frustrated by us dealing with Porto and Spurs though. I think the "bad blood" between their chairmen and our club means they will always make it more difficult than it needs to be. Maybe we should just look elsewhere and save a lot of time and angst. Cheers, Butch

If Roman really wanted him, he'd have been announced as manager by now. On the other hand, if he's not seriously in the running (i.e. completely out of it), he'd have been seriously mentioned in some of the "vacant" positions. I think Roman is still seriously going after his "Holy Grail" of a manager, and won't give up without a fight. Failing that, I believe the job to be Robbie's, but kind of by default. I wouldn't be particularly happy if I were Robbie, to be treated in this way I mean, but I do believe he understood the situation from day one and, having Chelsea in his heart, probably accepts that he is second choice and will wait patiently until told Pep wants it. I personally think it is 50:50; I do think Pep wants a break, BUT if Roman makes a very enticing offer (not beyond him), I think Pep could say yes as well. I am not going to say that I agree with Roman, only that I understand what he is doing (going after what his heart desires). I do feel the longer this goes the worse we look in terms of how we're treating Robbie. Still, I'm sure Robbie could walk away if he wanted, but the remaining possibility of landing the job full-time is probably still rather attractive for him. Cheers, Butch

I am not going to say that because he won us the FA Cup and Champions League he is the "second coming". We have all seen some mistakes here and there. However, this is why he would be a good a choice as any: (i) despite his relative lack of managerial experience, he was still able to come into what is well known to be a "difficult" dressing room and get the players organized and focused for the good of the club. I don't think we can take that likely. I have no doubt whatsoever that AVB is a good coach, BUT he didn't have the man management skills that Robbie obviously does. (ii) just as much as I don't want to say we had no luck whatsoever in the competitions we won and did it all exclusively by good tactics, I don't think we can take the opposite view either. If nothing else, Robbie came in and immediately saw exactly what he had to work with and got us playing to our strengths. I think that is a valuable skill. (iii) Robbie is Chelsea through and through - he has always emphasized the importance of the club over the players and himself. It is not often that a manager can talk from experience having played for the same club. I am not saying it is critical, but I do feel it is something that should not be overlooked. (iv) Robbie already has the fans on his side; he can concentrate on the footballing side of things. (v) Robbie's demeanor means he likely will not clash with the sulking powers that be at UEFA. (vi) Finally, after all, Robbie HAS won the Champions League that Roman so covets. Say what you like about luck, etc, we've had many star managers here over the years and none of them have done it. Considering the available manager pool is quickly dwindling before our eyes, I think we owe it to ourselves to at least give Robbie a chance. If we appoint someone else, and things don't go according to plan, we'll always wonder "what if" we stuck with Robbie. I don't know what more Robbie could have done to deserve this chance more, to be honest. Winning the league was never on, and he clearly had to prioritize for the competitions we could still win, to the detriment of the league. I'll admit it was a risky move, BUT he did get us into next season's Champions League too so you really cannot fault him for much. Cheers, Butch

GK: I'd like to see us recall Courtois from Atletico Madrid so he can push Cech for a starting place. Turnbull and Hilario are quite frankly not up to scratch. If Cech is unavailable, we might as well not turn up. DF: I like a defensive line-up of Ivanovic, Cole, JT and Cahill, with Luiz as back up utility defender and Bertrand as back up to Cole. But I think a right back to come in for Bosingwa/Ferreira would improve us. MF: My first choice and priority would be Modric. I think a win in Munich may make this deal a possibility. If we lose, however, I fail to see how he would choose us over staying at least one more season at Spurs. I am happy enough with our other midfield choices. FW: I think we definitely need to bring someone in for Drogba, but as important as that will be, my priority would be to bring in another wide forward, and I particularly would like to see Hulk here at the Bridge. Having him, Mata and Marin would help us immeasurably in the creative department. As for a striker, Cavani certainly gave us a huge amount of problems when we played Napoli. Don't think Lukaku is anywhere near ready. Some dreams (as opposed to realistic targets): Schweinsteiger & Mueller (both Bayern).
