Not sure why I am even commenting on this again; well, actually, I do. I really, really want Chelsea to sign Eden Hazard, despite not quite wanting to believe there is any chance whatsoever it will actually happen. This exciting player has already caught the eyes of the big clubs, with Real Madrid supposedly his preferred destination, as well as an interested party. Of course, Madrid don't have the same pressing need Chelsea do, in terms of a creative, attacking player. Our play has been devoid of creative impetus for a while now, and while Mata was signed to address this, and has done to a certain extent, he alone cannot do it all. The persistent rumors over the past week have excited me, seeing as to how I've wanted us to sign him for quite a while now. I can't for the life of me imagine where they are coming from. Yes, it has been a relatively quiet window so far, but I do expect activity to rise to a crescendo over the next couple of weeks. Are the idle press just getting bored? But why Hazard? And why to Chelsea? Is City not the more natural target for these sorts of rumors? Or is it because the press feel Chelsea are more in need of a creative player? But then since when has reason, or believability, figured prominently in wild rumors? Usually, these types of rumors just come and go. Maybe it is just cycling through the tabloids and will die down eventually. I guess my hope that this is true is making me feel it is a little more prolonged than normal (and thus possibly having some credibility to it, LOL). With some strength in depth in the CB department restored with the signing of Cahill, and with the resurgence of Torres and the impressive Mata and Sturridge, the addition of Eden Hazard would be the cherry on the icing for Chelsea. It would be quite the platform to build upon for the rest of the season (even if he is not eligible to feature in any of our remaining Champions League matches this season). We still have our work cut out for us to pull away from Arsenal, catch up with Spurs, and mount some sort of challenge on the two Manchester clubs in the league, not to mention an FA Cup campaign that is still open. I actually think he would do well in the EPL. It's just that the price stipulated in the release clause is absolutely bonkers; basically, Porto don't want to sell. If we could do a deal for, say, 30M, I'd be for it. But Hazard is my first choice. This is most definitely the type of player we need though. Cheers, Butch

I would believe AVB when he says Chelsea and Cahill are still "miles apart", but I would expect this not to be insurmountable. Cahill would be bonkers to want to drag this out too much and risk staying at Bolton until the end of the season. Chelsea would also be bonkers to risk losing a player seemingly AVB's first choice for CB strengthening. It is in the best interests of both parties to get this one done and dusted. We simply cannot allow another situation where Bossa and Paulo are filling in at RB and RCB. We lucked out on that occasion. What a state of affairs! Cheers, Butch

I suppose Anelka and Alex are definite departures for us. On this front, it will depend on whether AVB feels we have the players who could step in, or whether we have to look outside the club for replacements. In terms of Alex's departure, I believe we will definitely be signing a replacement, and my heart of hearts tells me it will be Gary Cahill. I hope it will be last season's Gary Cahill and not this season's Gary Cahill, as he's been quite useless, apart from his smashing goal earlier in the season. As for Anelka's replacement, while both Drogba and Torres are here, and Studge isn't injured, I think we're covered. However, when Drogs is away at the ANC, the question becomes, "is Lukaku ready"? To be honest, I don't think the striking department is the problem. I think the creative department is our really problem. I also think Malouda may look for pastures new as well, but AVB may decide to move this one back to the summer. As such, I do hope that in addition to the center back, we will look at at least one creative addition - either a CM or a winger. The players that have impressed me the most this season, not counting Studge (who's been a revelation), are Romeu, Ramires, and to a lesser extent Meireles. That's a bit of a conundrum, because we play with 3 CM's and if they are all impressive why do we need to add anymore. The problem with the trio of Romeu, Ramires and Meireles, is that while it is hard working unit, it simply is not creative (if Ramires knew how to hit the back of the net he'd be one of the best midfielders in the world). This means that the front three become isolated for all intents and purposes, and have to create for themselves. The dream signing for me would be Modric, not only because he has the qualities we need to improve our midfield, but also because we'd be weakening Spurs in one fell swoop, and that would certainly be good for us. At the moment, it is looking like a battle among them, us and Arsenal for 2 champions league spots, and Spurs have quite an advantage. However, for these same exact reasons, it is highly, highly unlikely Spurs are going to agree to any deal, which means a ludicrous offer is the only way to go (50M+). Not sure what our options are (Everton's Rodwell is still raw and might not be quite the signing we need to kickstart our flailing challenge). Wingers would not go amiss either, if we decide to stick with the midfield of Ramires, Meireles/Lampard and Romeu, as we need our front three to be able to create for themselves and each other. Hazard and Hulk would be awesome additions, but I am not sure how realistic they would be as targets. The latter for example is rumored to have a release clause-stipulated amount of 100 EUR. Add to that the "mid-season" nature of any deal, where selling clubs would be rather more hesitant than usual, and the fee tends to be driven up accordingly. I don't know who we will sign in January, but in terms of positions, I feel quite certain we need a CB and a creative player (CM or winger). Cheers, Butch
