  9. Before the game, Ray Wilkins and Andy Townsend were waxing lyrical about Chelsea and our chances, Wilkins slightly more so. Both were in agreement, however, that it was a bit of a shock to see both Drogba and Anelka on the bench for the start of the game. What I found interesting was Wilkin's honest assessment of Kalou - he'll never be more than a supersub for Chelsea and really isn't starting material. I've always felt this way and it was interesting to find out Wilkins felt the same way, knowing him much better than any of us. Anyway, I knew this was going to be a brutal, physical battle, what with De Jong and Toure in their midfield, and it turned out to be the case. Mancini is a surprisingly defensive-minded manager; I don't mean just regular defensive, I mean really defensive. They really came to park the bus and hit us on the counter, but they didn't have the one man who could have (and has) hurt us in this sort of tactic - Carlos Tevez, and I certainly breathed a huge sigh of relief when I found out he wouldn't be playing any part. As such, our defense looked pretty comfortable for most of the 90+ minutes, with City really providing only 1 or 2 moments of discomfort. As for Chelsea, we had to match City physically to start things off, and I felt we did that. Even Torres looked like he was up for the fight physically. He still looks like a fish out of water up front for us, and I have to say our passing in the final third left a LOT to be desired. I don't think any of our wide men, Ivan and Ash included, put in a single good cross all day despite ample opportunities. Kalou was also intent on going it alone at every opportunity, while Frank, as has been mentioned, looked a yard off the pace (I think the physical battle got to him a bit, as usually happens in our recent matches with City). So, in many ways, Torres isolation up front was not all down to him. Let's cut to the chase here, while JT was a colossus for us at the back, and once again overcame the pain barrier to remain on the pitch after Toure fell on his knee, there really was only ever one MoTM for us and that was Luiz. He still has the propensity to chase crazy interceptions and get caught out, but on the whole his reading of the game, his tackling, his footwork, and his hard work in all areas of the pitch (think about his work on the left wing that led to the free kick and our first goal), not to mention his goal that opened up the game, was just thrilling to watch. This was one heck of a signing for certain. I still get nervous watching him go for certain balls and make some tackles but if you look at his overall game the potential is staggering. In the post-match discussions, Wilkins was also very generous in his praise of Ramires, and he said that one of the reasons Chelsea beat City on the day is that we were fitter and better able to last the 90 minutes. He said that we had really fit players like Essien and Ramires, who can run forever, and who really come to life late in games when the opposition tires. Ramires' goal also had a bit of Brazilian flare to it, it was really great to watch. It must have been quite despiriting to the City defense to see the likes of Drogba and Anelka coming on for Chelsea as well, in that last twenty or so minutes when their bodies were already aching. The difference in qualities of the respective benches was apparent for all to see. Make no bones about it, this was an important win, particularly as it pertains to the battle for third, but don't doubt that this will have an effect on the psyche of the two teams above us. A month or so ago, I couldn't see us getting this close with still a significant amount of games to play. With the injury and confidence problems plaguing United and Arsenal, respectively, we aren't totally out of it. We still have a lot of work to do, and we really don't have any more room for slip ups (Stoke away in our next game is not going to be easy at all), but if we can keep our run going, we still have a shot. Cheers, Butch
  10. Roman chose Carlo himself, and we courted him for so long before he decided to come that I find it extremely bizarre for us to ditch him so soon, especially after he won us the double last season and has guided us into the CL quarterfinals this season. But then again, maybe we are all reading too much into this. He said we'll reassess things at the end of the season, which I guess is bog standard language for a suit. Some like to keep their managers on their toes. Cheers, Butch

  17. Dear Friends, Can't believe we're going into the home stretch again. In what has become a bit of a tradition here on the ShedEnd, it is now time again for the LAST-11 competition, where you are all welcome to post your predictions for Chelsea's remaining 11 matches of the EPL season. For those of you who aren't familiar, you will get 3 points for the exact correct score, 1 point for the correct result but incorrect scoreline, and 0 points for the wrong score and result. For correct results but incorrect scores, as well as for incorrect results, the difference between the number of goals you predict Chelsea to score and the number they actually score will also be tallied to use as tie-breakers (akin to your "goal difference"). A table will be prepared after each Chelsea EPL game so you can keep an eye out for how well you are doing. The remaining 11 EPL matches for the Blues are as follows: 1. 07 MAR Blackpool (A) 2. 20 MAR Man City (H) 3. 02 APR Stoke City (A) 4. 09 APR Wigan (H) 5. 16 APR W.B.A. (A) 6. 20 APR Birmingham (H) 7. 23 APR West Ham (H) 8. 30 APR Tottenham (H) 9. 07 MAY Man Utd (A) 10. 14 MAY Newcastle (H) 11. 22 MAY Everton (A) Please post your predictions (AS A REPLY IN THIS THREAD) for all these matches BEFORE our next EPL game at Blackpool next Monday (March 7th). Good luck! Cheers, Butch
  18. Still walking on air today. It was a smashing match: made possible by two sides that went for it. First half, United were better, although we started brightly. Very happy to see Torres show some good touches and he certainly looked fitter and sharper than he has recently. But our midfield was over run with some short, crisp passing by United and there really wasn't too much surprise when they went ahead. The defending by our players was a bit too loose. Second half, for once, seemed to bring about a change even though the personnel was the same. I'm not quite sure what Carlo said or did, but I give him credit for giving us the edge, and how brilliant was the goal by Luiz? I mean, what was he even doing there? The finish was just exquisite, and a fitting celebration to go with it. Carlo also made the right substitutions at the right time (well, he may have subbed Luiz off a little too late but we survived that scare), and importantly both Zhirkov and Drogba made important contributions. It was refreshing to see Didier, in particular, respond in the right way. He came on looking determined and focused, and he played for the team rather than for himself. On the one hand, that is what competition usually does to you, but on the other, he could easily have sulked his way to an unproductive thirty minutes so I am happy that that was not the case. A determined, focused Drogba will be a hugely important asset. I'm just happy that (i) we stood up to United, despite our mediocre recent form, and prevailed in the end, (ii) Carlo showed some control with the decision to drop Drogba to the bench, getting us back into the game despite a rather slow first half where we were laboring, and making good substitutions, (iii) we have some refreshing new talent in the squad in the form of Ramires, Torres and Luiz, and (iv) Didier is responding positively. These things bode well for us. Cheers, Butch
  19. 1. What are your thoughts on Sunday’s game, how important is it for Chelsea to claim maximum points? It is important from a confidence stand point, as a launchpad for a good end to the season. I don't believe it will have any real bearing on the destination of the league title, at least not as it pertains to us anyway. We do need to win as we need to go on a confident run to try to finish in the top four as a minimum. 2. Frank Lampard is expected to start, how big is his return for Chelsea? What team do you expect Ancelotti to select? I believe Frank means an awful lot for us. He and Terry are as big as they come for any club. From a footballing standpoint, when they are on their game, they are some of the world's finest. Even when they are not on form, their presence on the field as club leaders helps the players around them. Unfortunately for us, Frank is not quite on form, but to answer your question, I believe his return to be huge, especially for this big game. I expect to see: Cech, Ivanovic, Cole, Luiz, Terry, Mikel, Essien, Lampard, Anelka, Drogba and Torres. Personally, I'd have Ramires in there for Mikel and Malouda for Drogba, but I think Carlo will want his big guns on the pitch for this one. We'll see. 3. Do you know the reason why Ray Wilkins left Chelsea? Would you care to speculate? Frank Arnesen is leaving when his contract expires at the end of season and Ancelotti appears to be a lonely figure. What is happening behind the scenes at Chelsea? No idea. I think more than anything else, Roman is just "flexing his muscles" and interfering as any club owner is want to do from time to time. While I love Wilkins, and I have no doubt the players do too, I don't think this has much to do with our drop in form. I think it is just a convenient excuse. Arnesen is probably looking for a change of scenery and probably believes he has done what he can and that there are plenty of good Chelsea youngsters at the club already who will be pushing through in the near future. Also, I have a sneeky feeling Roman is looking to change gears a little and do an overhaul of some sorts that means youngsters may not be the flavor of the day in the immediate future, and thus Frank thinks its as good a time as any to move on. 4. If everyone is fit Chelsea have a very strong starting XI. However, is there an over reliance on younger players if first regulars are unavailable? Is Chelsea’s squad lacking strength in depth? At the beginning of the season until the January transfer window, I would have (and did) say so. If you look at our bench today with the likes of Turnbull, Ferreira, Bosingwa, Mikel, Malouda, Ramires, Essien, Luiz, Kalou, Drogba, Anelka all featuring at some time or other, and really only McEachran as the young one in the mix, I'd have to say that the signings of Torres and Luiz have added much needed depth to our squad. 5. The reason for Chelsea’s drop in form, is it the departure of Wilkins? Or,is it injuries/suspensions to key players? Most definitely injuries and suspensions to key players, particularly Lampard and Drogba. Subsequently, a loss of confidence has sustained the bad/mediocre patch. 6. What are your thoughts on new signing Ramires? The bees knees; he started slowly but has come on leaps and bounds. I think the fact that most Chelsea fans want him to start in place of the likes of Michael Essien says an awful lot. 7. Which Chelsea youngsters are worth keeping an eye on and why? Josh McEachran and Gaël Kakuta and Fabio Borini are names that spring to mind. McEachran has shown a lot of poise, and has not looked too out of place when he has figured for Chelsea this season. I cannot say the same of any of the other Chelsea youngsters, Kakuta included, except for Patrick van Aanholt, who is a shoe in to replace Ashley Cole in the not too distant future. 8. Favourite Manchester United vs Chelsea match and Why? Our 9 million pound English striker, Chris Sutton, scored one of his very few goals against your lot at the Bridge a few years back, and Jody Morris tucked the 5th through your keeper's legs and proceeded with the famous trumpet celebration. I think Gus Poyet scored two that day, and there was also an own goal to rob Sutton of what looked like being his second. All in all, not something that happens every day, especially at that time. 9. Favourite all time Chelsea player and why? Frank Lampard. I wanted very much for us to sign him at the time, while most Chelsea fans I spoke to were vehemently against it. Thank goodness Claudio Ranieri went for it and the rest, as they say, is history. What I've enjoyed is seeing his progression, some would say transformation, into one of the most complete midfielders in the game, especially at his peak during the Mourinho years. A special mention, of course, must go out for Gianfranco Zola, the most exciting player I've had the pleasure of seeing at Chelsea, and wee Pat Nevin. Cheers, Butch
  20. Come rain or shine, regardless of where we are in the league or our general form, we will always be up for a match with Man Utd. Bring it on! Cheers, Butch
  21. Just wanted to highlight these two points: I am still ecstatic we signed Torres, and Luiz (always seems to be mentioned as an afterthought but I think the Brazilian is a tremendous signing in his own right). He will most definitely be here for a long time and we will eventually be relying heavily on him. Forget the Liverpool-loving press; they will always try to put Torres down at every opportunity because he left them for so much money. The Spurs result was also huge; it may be disappointing that this is what it is coming down to - a battle for 4th with Spurs, but that is the reality and until we go on a good run of form that may challenge City and Arsenal, that is what we have to concentrate on doing: outdoing Spurs, that is. Let's make this advantage count now. Cheers, Butch

  23. Very happy with the result. An away Champions League match against the champions of Denmark (puts the Champions back in Champions League, doesn't it?) - don't care if they're off full fitness due to the winter break, more power to us! We could have shown up with a slow, dreary, low in confidence, frozen by the cold performance and came away with a draw just as easily, but we didn't. We took the bull by the horns, with plenty of good movement up front. I think Nico in particular, but also FloMo and Torres showed good movement all game. I was most impressed by Nico's ball movement. His first touch was excellent (to move the ball away from a defender), and his second was mostly headed towards goal, which isn't something we can say too often this season. He, more than most, got us the win today (and I'm not talking about his goals, which were both confidently struck). Of course, Copenhagen did not do a very good job closing us down in their half, but Carlo did say we worked hard on training to prevent any closing down by good movement (now, why can't we work on this before every game then?), so let's give the team the benefit of the doubt and say it was as much down to us as it was to them. I have to reiterate that Nico, FloMo and Torres did all looked quite lively. Now let's just do the professional job back at the Bridge and get through to the next round. By the way, love the away kit, and as for Essien, "the snood is good", LOL. Cheers, Butch
