  1. Ive always been fan of The Charlatans, always thought they were very under-rated. Their albums between 1994 and 2001 were all top notch. They are still going of course - i went to their greatest hits tour last November - here is pic i took of Tim Burgess at the gig (dont you just hate those tossers with camera phones at concerts!) http://img204.imageshack.us/my.php?image=image009qw0.jpg
  2. Good call. Just bought Let It be. Great stuff.
  3. coming from Geldorf....
  4. 2nd best http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lbryVFLlCc
  5. You can never have too much Talking Heads! Heres my fave...
  6. Oh yes. He is a very serious artist these days. His records tend to be a bit hit and miss and can be very hard work.
  7. I actually agree with this. Not in a musical sense. But in the fact they changed the way music was marketed but most of all they proved that anyone can do it and that you didnt have to be a trained talented musician to have a hit record especially in the horrible musical waters of the mid 70s ( IE Pink Floyd) That ethos still lives and breathes today.
  8. Is there an ignore button ? Good god yes. 'Sheriff Fatman' reminds me of college discos and White Lighting cider. EMF werent that bad, Sorry. They were. Yes, they were. Didnt one of them die recently ?
  9. and 'Rush Hour' by Jane Wieldlin - the best pop song evermade! Im serious! heres another 80s fave of mine. Check the haircuts, check the makeup and then name the band. The singer is actually now a bloody good solo artist.
  10. I agree that for The Stuffies they peaked with 'The 8 Legged', Mike if youve bought the remastered cd version it includes 'A Song Without An End' 'Astley In The Noose' whice are great lost tracks. I still have my 'Its Yer Money Im After Baby' long sleeved baggy tshirt somewhere .After this they released the utterley classic 'CircleSqaure' but then went downhill, Miles Hunt was a w**ker of the very highest order. We saw them in Brum before Xmas and it has to be said it was a great night. Dont wory i wont post the link to the video i was in again!!!! Neds were part of the grebo scene that was pretty big where i lived back then. I always thought they were very over-rated however nowhere near as bad as MegaCityFour or the awful Pop Will Eat Itself Wot not 'Pills, Thrills' ? *faints*
  11. Of course, The Roses are a given! They and The Mondays were responsible for me wearing very silly clothes and adorning extremley silly haircurts. But worst of all they made me dance. Lets not start about The Second Coming again though Loz! From that era and into the early 90s i could also mention The Paris Angels, The Sundays, The House Of Love, The WonderStuff and Ride. But thats digressing from Mikes orginal 80s thread so lets keep it to the dayglo decade!
  12. Oh my word. My dreams are made of this. Strummer The Specials and The Pogues. On the same stage. They still have 'Straight to Hell' as their intro music. Have seen the Pogues live every Christmas for the last 3 years. They still have it. Shane cant walk, cant talk and cant stand but he still sings like an angel. .2007 will be Joy Divisons year. The 3 albums are to be remastered and rereleased and of course 'Control' is due to come out. That will be a fun night out! JD were a terryfying band , totally distant and claustrophobic (a lot of that is down to Martin Hannett) they were so far ahead of their time it was scary. Have to disagree about New Order not matching up to them im afraid Loz! Can i also add My Bloody Valentine. What a band. I saw them at the Birmingham Hummingbird in 1991 and it was the loudest gig i have ever been to in my life (on that tour it is rumoured the sound engingeer resigned because he was concerend the band were gonna get sued by deaf fans!) All i remember from the gig was white noise and white strobes! Great stuff. and The Pyschedelic Furs Not really indie more new-wave. The Furs are one of my favorite 80s bands. They ended up with a bigger following in the US than over here - mainly due to a certain song on certain soundtrack but they were so much more than a John Hughes teenage coming of age movie. They are still going, albeit as a money laundering greatest hits touring package. But 'Talk Talk Talk' and 'Mirror Moves' still stand up against anything from that era.
  13. I only noticed this yesterday, Jesus f**king Christ where was the annoucement ? Id have been mad if i hadnt got one. Anyway i got one so im happy! See you in Cardiff. Im getting the train from Brum so hopefully straight in and straight out for me without having to deal with the M4 and any London traffic!
  14. Great thread - Some interesting choices there Mike. First and foremost do you have an recordings of Gorgeous ? I d love to hear them/you! They made a return later in decade simply as Fuzzbox didnt they? Had a bit hit with 'International Rescue'. They were from Solihull where i was living at the time. Unlike as mentioned in the other thread regarding The Cure i couldnt pretend to like them because i lived in the same town as them. They were awful. Singer was dead fit though. Seen her around a few times since. I still would. Still going strong you know.. If i start i wont stop. I bow down to anyone who was lucky enough to have seen The Smiths in concert!!!!1 I can only imagine what sort of impact they had in 1984. I love Psychocandy. Bobby Gillespe of course went on to form the Primals who are still going strong. My dodgy indie band years were prob 1989 through to 1993, but thats for a different thread. From the era you speak Mike can I add The Stockholm Monsters ? Factorys great lost band. They couldlve and shouldve been massive. Check them out if you can find anything!
  15. You know i actually dont mind Russell Brand, i feel i should hate him, but i just dont for some reason.
  16. As you saw from my post Loz, I lived in Crawley for a few years at the early end of the 80s - this was where the Cure were from. This of course meant everyone at school pretended to like them. Remember this was early 80s - the Cure were still a cult band then not yet anywhere near the worldwide success they became later. You can imagine all us junior school kids pretending to listen to 'Faith' and 'Pornography'! As I grew older i did get into The Cure for real - 'Disintegration' is a masterpiece, possibly the best produced album ive ever heard. The Wedding Present i quite liked too. Obiviously 'George Best' is a classic and who can forget all those singles in one year! I actually bought the cd collection of that a few years ago. Did you catch their new cd last year or the year before ?
  17. There isnt really any middle ground with the The Smiths - there isnt another band i know of that divide people so much. There are not many people who 'quite like' The Smiths' , half either hate them and dont understand them or the other half such as Loz and myself love them to death. When i meet fellow Smiths fan its like ive meant a kindred spirit. Seriously, thats how sad we all are. I remember the first time I heard them. It was Sunday night in 1984 and i was in the car with my Dad to pick up some fish and chips in Crawley town centre. 'What Difference Does It Make?' came on (it was Top 40 night of course) and i remember never having heard anything like it before. I was mesmorised by the guitar (i still am on that track) and by the voice - 'im still fond of you'. It was amazing stuff. I remember my Dad saying it was the biggest pile of crap he had ever heard (like all baby boomers do when you mention The Smiths). The following week I spent my pocket money on the single and played it to death. I cannot lie and say i became a Smiths die hard there and then, because after all I was only ten. In those days it was Duran and Tears For Fears for me. But i kept track of The Smiths. I remember seeing them on TOTP a few times and was always aware of how different they were to everyone else. The first album i bought of theirs was 'Strangeways Here We Come' in 1987, released just after the split. A fine album i listened to it inbetween bouts of Depeche Mode and Terence Trent Darby . I always followed the Smiths and it wasnt untill around the start of the 90s that i began to delve deeper. I suspect Sixth form college and the Mondays/The Roses had a lot to do with it. Anyway it was then i began to appreciate just what a band they were, both musically and lyrically. A lot of things i could really relate to and of course a lot i couldnt and never will but i still listened , thrilled to hear how much they really meant it. Now, years later i have everything The Smiths and Morrissey have ever recorded, yes im that sad. Only The Clash and maybe The Pogues or New Order rival them as my favorites. Even if people hate them i hope them to acknowledge just how important The Smiths were at the time and just how different they were, but most of all just how much they mean to people. Ive seen Morrissey in concert now 14 times for my sins! Each time its very special. I cant think of another recording artist who gets such devotion. Good god. Thats how to finish your last half hour at work. What a terribly pompus piece of writing Each to their own! Apologies i slightly digressed there....So yes, The Brit awards. Im sure we call all agree that The Killers are awful...
  18. That was slightly snobbish of me and i apologise. There is nothing worse than a music snob. I try my hardest not to be one but sometimes its just so hard not to be. Its just The Smiths are funny, seriously listen to the lyrics. Well at least some of the lyrics...And as for talentless... Anyway apolgies Mr Ethical, i wont edit my orginal post so everyone can see what a tosser i sounded. As for Muse well i have to admit i dont hate them that much - I just enjoy antaganising their fans who believe them to be the second coming thats all. Look, youve got me started again...
  19. Oh dear. I hope you enjoyed Snow Patrols last album. I love it when people call The Smiths depressing and miserable. Or Johnny Marr talentless. Loz, shall i deal with this or do you want to ?
  20. I always thought that sounded a lot more like The Las than Lyla! Best tune they have done in 10 years IMO
  21. Spot on. Just think about the stateof the charts when Supersonic hit the Top 40. The music scene consisted of dreay alternative American bands or the cheapest dance music. It wouldve been unthinkable in Jan 1994 to think that a guitar band from Manchester would break though and create the impact they did. They just had no right. But they did. Plagarism or not. Definitley Maybe hit the spot for me at a certain time in my life and i will never forget that. Im happy to take all the patronising from people who have a 'been there done that' attitude, like i said i cant help being born when i was. I think to simply dismiss Oasis as rip off merchants is soemwhat missing the point. Im sure our Noel would be the first to admit he has half inched many, many tunes. I could post a link to a video of 'Get It On' (Cigarettes & Alcohol), or 'When The Levee Breaks' (D'ya Know What I Mean) or perhaps 'Id Like To Teach The World To Sing (Shakermaker). But I wont. Definitley Maybe for me, just like many classic reminds me of great times as well as having great tunes. Id love to say i have a top ten greatest albums list that included a Kraftwerk Dutch bsides collection from 1978 or a bootleg Can gig in Yugoslavia but i cant. Definitley Maybe is in my all time top ten albums list sitting alongside, London Calling, The Queen Is Dead and The Specials and more recently Ryan Adams' Heartbreaker. Im sorry if it isnt cool but i just cant deny it.
  22. Mike, I have to say that i think 'Definitley Maybe' is a brilliant album. There, ive said it. I apologise for not being 45 and not being around when 'Down The Tube Station' hit the charts or when John said The Bealtes were bigger than God but there isnt a lot i can do about that. I was 18 when it came out and it meant the world to me. Guitars and attitude. Yep, that'll do me thanks. Even then i would be the first to admit that it was nothing new. But it was fresh. Im not old enough to remember who did it first so i dont have any nostalgic fallback . However, its good music, at times wonderful music (take a listen to Live Forever or Slide Away) Of course like ive already said in this thread, they are now nothing but a rehash greatest hits touring circus act now. But at that time they were very special to me and led me to discover what influenced them - The Clash (along with the The Smiths) are my favorite band and i should acknowledge the part Oasis have played in that. im not so sure if i agree with that. after all what did Wilde say about plagiarism ?
