So what's with Townsend?
I alway remember we play villa in a pre season friendly and it was a 2 minute silent for Matt Busby and it was Townsend first match agains us ,and during the silent someone from the west stand shouted out Townsend your a judias and the whole ground just fell about with laughter . Ken Bate was not happy about it at the time but that what we all thought of him at the time ,because he kept on saying that Chelsea is the only club he wanted to play for because he supported us as a kid. Then he Slag use off once he left.

Arsenal v Chelsea 84
I remember it well I was 23 at the time and recon it was one of our best away support in them days I was in the clock end that day. But there were Chelsea in both stands and the North Bank ,I can remember that they could not move Chelsea out of the North Bank and they were there for the entire match . I did not see any one wearing colours that day but in them days no one did. What a great morning that was.

But we always know that we struggle with our attendance in the 80's and early 90's and we never denied it but I hear so many georges go on how they use to sell out every games in the 80's & 90's which is not true and i have been there when there when they had loads of empty spaces. But we still had one of the best away support in the country .

Agreed I can remember going up there a few times in the 80's and early 90's and the crowd was around 20,000. I was at one game against us in the 80's and there was about 18,000 and we had about 3,000.

I think it was the very early 80s it was near the end of the season and loads of fans went to Blackpool on the Friday night. Then onto Preston on the Saturday, l can remember a few of the boys got in there end and ran the Preston. After the game the bill would not let anyone get the train back to Blackpool but made sure we all board the trains back to euston. Good old days we did have a lot of fun then.

We use to have the best away support out of London them days and not just to games that matter but also place like Oldham and Bolton. I can always remember what great support we took to Cardiff and Swansea a few time . I can also remember Bristol City away where the terraces were packed so we went into the new stand and the bill let use sit around the pitch. Them days most of us use to get the inter city train every away game even to away games during the week. And people tell me l should look forward not backward but they were great days.

I remember the Brighton game we went down early by train that morning and all every one was talking about what happen the night before. I can remember after we had a few pints in the the town center we made our way to the ground and it was a very long walk. Once at the ground we decided to stand on the side terraces because the end behind the goal was packed we were surprise how many were also in the seats and also on the side terraces. I must amit after the game when we invaded the pitch I could not be bovid to clime over fences. We decided to get a bus back to the station because it was the walk and we notice there were a few little running battles. Those were great days you would never see away supports like that again.
