Maksimov
I wonder if the band "leaked it" themselves. That happens...or so I've heard. Is it any good?

bjd
My expectations are pretty low so I think I can wait until it's officially released. Why ? Playing The Angel was a return to form after the awful Exciter. Gahans Hourglass was good too. I think he has 4 songs on this one. Ive listened to it a few times today. Certainly its not instant and will need a few takes. There are a few standouts, a few instrumentals and one hideous one that sounds like Erasure. Give me an week and i'll give you a full verdict. Great to have them back anway. Cant wait for the 02 in May and the NEC in Dec. Nothing beats DM in concert. Edited March 31, 2009 by bjd
Maksimov
Why ? Playing The Angel was a return to form after the awful Exciter. I wouldn't say "Playing the Angel" was a return to form, although it was an improvement. It was better than Exciter, but that doesn't take much. I haven't listened to Hourglass as I wasn't too keen on Paper Monsters. It will be interesting to hear what they've come up with, though. Hopefully the new one isn't as bad as its cover art. bjd
Hopefully the new one isn't as bad as its cover art. It really is awful isnt it ? What are they thinking?! The album certain have a nice atmosphere and everything links into each other well. I wouldnt say there are any real classics on there but there are lots of pretty strong songs. Still, its early days, i do think im gonna get to really like it though. I presume youve seen this ?

Maksimov
I've finally listened to the new album for the first time and it wasn't bad, but there weren't any real highlights for me either. "Wrong" is the only song that I can remember after listening to it, but that's probably because I had heard it before. It sounds like a DM record, but I wasn't too excited about it. We'll see if my opinion changes when I hear it some more, but so far I'm not too impressed.
bjd
Have to say ive struggled. And im a bit disappointed. Ive tried and tried and tried, but its not doing it. It has a nice relaxing feel to it, but there are some very weak moments, and dare i say some stuff that is very MOR and lacking inspiriation. 'In Chains' is a great opener - possibly the strongest opening DM song since 'I Feel You' , 'Wrong' is great and 'In Sympathy' and 'Come Back' are strong. Other than that im struggling. 'Peace' has to be heard to be believed. Its embarrasing and sounds like an Erasure b-side from 1987. Stunningly, its the new single. I cant understand it. If you can try and download the box set, on the extra tracks there are three ('Light, Ghost and 'Oh Well') all of which shouldve made it onto the album and all of which are quite hi-tempo - in particular 'Light' is stronger than msot of the album. I can send them to you if you wish. The best thing i can say about this album is the general uplifting mood which it has, the worst is that it makes me think 'Exciter' wasnt actually too bad! All in all id say the weakest DM album since 'A Broken Frame'. Its just so disappointing. What worries me now is that Dave Gahans two solo albums have been stronger than 2 of the last 3 DM albums. Doesnt bode well. Roll on the tour, i still cant wait for that! What a day lies ahead for me on 30/05/09 - The Cup Final and DM at The 02 in London!!! I cant understand it. Oh, it's pretty bad. For some reason some parts of it reminds me of that '90s one hit wonder Babylon Zoo, which can't be a good thing. The Erasure comparison is fitting, sadly enough.

bjd
Is the o2 one on still bjd, I hear a few have been cancelled lately around the world? As it stands, yes. Gahan has had a bout of gasterenteritus and theyve had to cancel about 6 gigs in Eastern Europe. So its fingers crossed for Sat (in more ways than one!) Should find out in the next few days. bjd
Its been cancelled :o But it sounds awful what happened. Best wishes Mr G! Depeche Mode are pleased to announce they will restart their interrupted Tour Of The Universe in Leipzig, Germany on June 8th. On May 12th, lead singer Dave Gahan suffered a severe bout of gastroenteritis, leading to his hospitalization and the cancellation of the Athens concert. While in hospital, further medical tests revealed a low-grade malignant tumour in Dave's bladder, which has since been successfully removed. At doctors' orders Dave Gahan must take a break until June 8th, to ensure that he makes a full recovery. The Leipzig show on June 8th will be the first concert following Dave's recovery.Dave Gahan sincerely thanks his fans for their support, understanding and patience. Depeche Mode deeply regret any problems or inconveniences the cancellations and postponements may have caused.

Hope you have a great time at the gig bjd, cant believe Nitzer Ebb are supporting too - thats amazing. I had the pleasure of seeing Doug McCarthy and co at a gig in Folkestone many years ago. Fantastic group - and their new album is almost back to the level of Belief and Ebbhead. Enjoy

Fantastic group - and their new album is almost back to the level of Belief and Ebbhead. Enjoy Great night, predictably. Nitzer were fantastic. A great choice for a DM support at as there is such a lot to compare the bands and they have so many links. They went down really well. As we always thought would happen some of the music sounds dated now but tracks like 'I Give To You' and 'Ascend' still sound brilliant. Have to say i wasnt aware of a new album - i will be looking to 'acquire' that today.... DM were great, as they always are. Perhaps look a little tired after a long year but still played their hearts out. Mart and Dave really working well as a front pair these days. Tellingly only four tracks were played from SOTU when at the start of the tour last May they were playing about nine or ten. Last nights standouts were 'A Question Of Time', 'Walking In My Shoes', 'Policy Of Truth' (which seems to have become the balloon song) and of course 'Never Let Me Down Again'. Would've like a few more surprises, like last tours 'Shake The Disease' for example but that is just being picky. Thats that for the SOTU era then. I guess we can expect another Dave solo album next year and then who knows ? Be great if Alan Wilder decided he enjoyed last Wednesday so much he wanted to return.... Pics to follow. Makelele's Ukelele
Glad it was a good night - although really and truly - could it have been anything other lol ? Looks like the O2 was packed to the rafters, i imagine the atmosphere must have been electric. Guess i`ll just have to wait until the next round of tours (and hope that they let Nitzer on board again too ) Would love Alan to join up with the band again - those were the halcyon days without doubt !
