Burnley have agreed a fee to sign the 22-year-old Scotland striker Steven Fletcher from Hibernian. If completed, the move would cap a busy 24 hours for the club's manager Owen Coyle, who also secured the transfer of defender Tyrone Mears from Derby for around £500,000.

Coyle began talks with Fletcher earlier today, hours after 26-year-old Mears signed a three-year deal with the club.

Fletcher, who has three full caps for Scotland, scored 52 goals in 137 starts during his time at Easter Road. One report claimed that a fee of around £2.8m, rising to £3.5m, had been agreed, depending on appearances and performances.

Fletcher had four years of his contract to run and the new Hibs manager John Hughes had hoped he would stay. But Celtic failed to secure his services in January and Fletcher has indicated he would like to further his career in England's top flight.

Mears is looking for a change of luck in the Premier League after a demoralising experience in the 2007-08 season, when he was part of the Derby side that finished bottom of the table with an all-time low tally of 11 points.

"It was a freak season, something I do not think will happen again. I have blanked it out of my mind," Mears told Clarets World. "I like to get forward but it was difficult to do that as we never had any of the ball. I hope it is going to be different this time with Burnley. I may have had experience in the top flight but I still need to prove I am a Premier League player."

Mears spent a season on loan with Marseille, but wanted to return to England for family reasons. "Marseille is a great club. If it was a different situation I would have signed there," he said, "but I needed to come back to England and Burnley have given me that chance in the Premier League."

I'm excited to see Fletcher in the premier league. I've always had a deep affinity for the SPL, and would love to see someone outside of the Old Firm thrive in a league like the EPL.

Think he's well over-rated. He only scored 11 league goals in the SPL last season, don't know how he thinks he's going to do well in the Premiership, especially considering Burnley will no doubt be playing 4-5-1 and grinding out draws.

Obviously I hope he does well though, as it will bode well for the national team.

Be good to see how he does in the Premiership. just hope he doesn't pull a Bazza Ferguson! As a Scotsman I'll be interested to see how he progresses, he is only 22.

Thinking of Scottish players in the prem right now, what ever happened to Hutton at Spuds?

Not sure what's happened to Hutton, apart from he had a bad injury some time ago.

I'd love more Scots to be signed up by English clubs just like years ago, and I'm sure there are plenty of young Scots players who would make the grade down here if they were only given the chance - James Gibson (Hamilton), Darren Barr (Falkirk) & Steve Fletcher all spring to mind.

Hutton only ended up playing a handful of times for Spurs due to injury. His season was pretty much wrecked and even when he did regain fitness he struggled to win his place back. He is fit again now and expeced to be at Spurs next season although there has been some rumours that Moyes is interested in taking him to Everton. .

I knew he was injured but thanks for the update Loz. I miss there being Scottish player in the Premiership, but I think that says a lot about the state of Scottish football more than anything else

Barr is decent at SPL level, would be found out in the Premiership.

I think Fletcher is overrated, glad Rangers didn't sign him. Young Scottish players I'd be looking to sign if I were a Prem manager would be Scott Arfield (Falkirk), James McCarthy, James McArthur and Brian Easton (all Hamilton).

McCarthy plays for Ireland's youth team, but that's a whole different debate.

To be honest I think the standard of the SPL is worse now than it has been at any point in the past 20 years. I don't think there is a single Scottish player, old or young, who would make the grade in the Premiership. I expect Fletcher to flop and return to Scotland witin the next two seasons.
