Chelsea Megastore

Featured Replies

Decided to order a 1905 Earl of Cadogan Chelsea shirt today. I was going to wait for Xmas, but as it happens I've got a few quid spare this week, and besides the Megastore are currently giving away a free John Terry mug (offer closes October 16th) with every order:

Free John Terry Mug

And this is the shirt I'm having:

Very nice, very nice.

Help me out here: is it pronounced CA-dogan or Ca-DOgan?

Neither - CadUgan! (U as is Ugh!) - I think!

Hmmmm... I saw an episode of Law & Order Criminal Intent once (with my own personal cutie Vincent D'Onofrio), and the name of Cadogan came up. It was pronounced CA-dogan. But what do Americans know about English, right? Or Irish, for that matter  ?

very nice

what you going have for xmas now???

Given half the chance, I'll be having a complete break/escape from anything even remotely Xmassy. Not too difficult because my mother will be in Bristol, my sister and her family will be away in Switzerland or somewhere, and anyone else I buy for can either have whatever I get them in the post or they can wait til New Year.

Call me Ebenezer.

Sorry to hijack your thread, Lofty, but the pronunciation of Cadogan is bugging me. But look what I found on the net: http://www.howjsay.com/index.php?word=cadogan

Carry on, all. So yeah, what are you going to get for Christmas, Lofty?

See above

As for Cadogan, it's pronounced Caduggan. ug as in mug, hug, or Suggs. But not as in ugh.

You don't pronounce ugh to rhyme with mug? How do you pronounce it then?

Well you do, kind of but it's the "y" that makes the difference. But I'm splitting hairs there. The point really is that "ugh" just doesn't seem appropriate in relation to any Chelsea shirt.

Where's the Y in ugh? Ugh is not the same as yuck! But I take your point, it was most remiss of me to have used such a derogatory ejaculation in relation to a Chelsea shirt, -particularly such an elegant one.

Oh ye of little faith! You checked up on me!

Checking up, checking up.... Call it curiosity and a desire to learn another language as well as one can :D .

Indeed, your zeal is to be applauded. :D ;)

Would that even half the inhabitants of England spoke as good English as you do!

Yeah, but you're from Schizophrenia, so that's understandable!

Shouldn't that be "spoke English as well as you do"? Or are you testing me :P ?

No, they're both correct! I've used an adjective to qualify "English" whereas you've used an adverb to modify "spoke". Does that make the situation suitably clear?

Anyway, the sun's out so I'm off down the beach for a swim and to top up my tan!
