So, the league is looking better this year than in previous seasons. There's some exciting games, and some quality football being played (not always, but sometimes).

Luckily for me, my team, the Brisbane Roar, are looking very good, and playing well. 7 points from 3 games in what's a tightly contested league (partly down to the salary cap).

One dissapointment for me, is the 11 teams in there...meaning each week, there's one team that gets a bye...and I hate byes...but the 12th team should be in next season.

I think there's only been one former Chelsea player in the league...and that is Joe Keenan...barely played for Chelsea, but the man has played for 2 separate A-League teams.

While the league is in it's infancy still, the players of note are predominately Australian internationals past and present (Sterjovski, Culina, Aloisi, Skoko, Thompson, Carle, North, Colosimo, Muscat, Burns, Foxe, Beauchamp) most of which have had decent careers overseas (Moore and Tiatto played last year too).

In addition to that, there's other players who are the 'big names' of overseas players. Yorke, Fowler and Juninho have been the top ones, Fowler the only one still here. We also had Mario Jardel here for a while...but he was fat...and terrible. Then there's another lower level of foreign players who had forged decent careers whether in domestic leagues or international (Michael Bridges, John Curtis, Charlie Miller, Rugter Worm, Grant Brebner, Carlos Hernandez, Erik Akoto, Andre Kilian, Steven McGarry. Stephan Keller, Paul Ifil, etc.).

At the moment, one of the better looking players, plays for Brisbane, Thomas Broich, a former u21 German international, and Bundesliga player...and not over the hill yet.

Anyway, I will try and post any interesting updates from the A-League here...hopefully there's some interest, if not...meh...I'll do it anyway

I know no-one cares, so I haven't been posting updates...but my team Brisbane Roar, is second on the table, after little was expected of them at the start.

This video is the highlights of their last game (midweek fixture against CCM). If anyone wants to watch it feel free. Oh and I should point out, the crowds are dissapointing...it's a blight on the game, but hopefully it will improve as the A-League gets older.

Skip to 1.50ish and 3.50ish for a couple of nice goals which helped the team win 2-0.

I think you'll like the cap as, like you stated, it has provided a a tight competitive league.

Growing up in a world of salary capped sports, you RARELY see dynasties of teams winning 3 titles in a row or even back to back. You have teams that are consistently good/at the top, but rarely are they able to win the whole shebang repeatedly.

Now does the league have a draft ?

Drafts are cool because the worst teams get first pick at the new crops of players coming into the league meaning they get to supplement the squad with future stars! It also makes the cap really tricky as those players come in on low contracts but they will explode big time when they are eligible to resign/sign with another club....so managing the money is a tactic as important the ones you deploy on the pitch.... and a reason why relegation/promotion doesnt work with drafts.

Sydney have certainly struggled a bit...ok...a lot

Yes, Australia is full of salary capped sports. Football has the lowest salary cap of all the major sports though. And you're right, teams haven't tended to dominate too much...but in the 5 completed seasons, two teams have won twice (Melbourne and Sydney) and one team once. But a team can win one year and really struggle the next year, before bouncing back again. It's certainly competitive on the whole, but when it comes down to it, it's Australia's two biggest cities that have had the most success.

And no, we don't have a draft. Our players tend to come through the state leagues and some from abroad. Innevitably, if a player stands out, they move overseas. Brisbane sold three players to Dutch side Utrecht in the off-season...and a goalkeeper was sent to Dortmund. Few players have gone to England immediately since the A-League begun, instead going to areas like Turkey, Greece, Norway (etc). We need more money into the clubs (higher crowds) before the salary cap will be upped much. As it stands, some clubs are basically insolvent.

The draft idea has always interested me (we have drafts for our Australian Football League - AFL), but I don't think there's any real need for football. Most A-League teams monitor the state leagues quite closely.

I'm planning on witnessing my first bit of live A-League action next month when I visit Perth, they're playing Melbourne Victory at home on the 14th and for me it will be interesting to see how Robbie Fowler plays at that level.

Well, the fun begins.

Sydney FC vs Brisbane Roar.

I hope Perth didn't play Sydney into form....

lol, not likely. Two of our best players from the Perth game (Carle and Mcflynn) are both out with injury.

Anything less than a loss for Brisbane is a massive failure- Adelaide have won here twice.
