An interesting chat with Bobby Tambling - and others

Featured Replies

I went to the fans lunch on Friday, an interesting day because most of the fans have got such a downer on the club at the moment.  For the first time in a good few years Bruce Buck didn't get up and do a speech this year!

Anyway, it was an excellent day with lots of former players there and happy to chat.  I have even managed to get Rodders (Dave Lee) to agree to doing some coaching with the kids team that I run.

Anyway during the day, and Dave Lee aside there were a couple of things that I thought would be of particular interest;

Firstly a chat I had with bobby Tambling.  It was great to see him and his wife there and he looked pretty well to be honest.  I mentioned to him that I'm a member of this forum and he almost started filling up instantly, going on about how touching his card was, and how it became the stuff of legend around the hospital etc.  I think he must have been drunk because he described Gem as the most wonderful and lovely girl - you must have toned the language down the day you met him Gem???  It was really great to see first hand though just how much that gesture meant to him, so well done everyone that contributed to the card (and to Gem for pulling the whole thing together).

Secondly, Dave Webb was interviewed by Johnny Gould, he started going on about what a great owner we have and how much good he's done for the club etc etc etc.  A right load of pre-arranged bullsh*t as it happens, but it was sad to see a former great doing something so low, specially as he clearly didn't believe a word of what he was saying.

Anyway I had a great day out, ended up absolutely steaming drunk and with plenty of photo's and autographs.  I did make one cock-up though, I was standing next to a player that I recognised but couldn't remember who it was, so I turn round to him and say; "are you Jacob Kieljberg?" , the reply came back, "no!".

It was Frode Grodas so I wasn't too far away.

Cant remember if ive told this story, but talking BOBBY TAMBLING...In 1968 when i was 45(joke), i was holidaying on Hayling Island..I went to a sports shop there . I saw a picture of BT that i bought...To my surprise the lady who served me HIS MUM, asked if i would like BT to sign it...BT came out of the back n signed it...I was a very proud 13 yr old

Sounds like a good day out. Great to hear about the card gesture and how much it meant him.

Awesome stuff!  :smile:

His wife is lovely isn't she? She pulled me to one side and couldn't thank me/us enough for the card, said it really pulled him through a couple of tough moments. To hear that blew my breath away, he near enough admitted it himself but the look in her eye told me she was being deadly serious.

In fact I just found my original post and this was it: 'He called to thank me for the card. He said it was the greatest piece of fan memorabilia he had ever received and it now sits proudly in him home. Nurses, doctors, visitors etc all saw this card and it became a legendary piece in the hospital!!! He (and Val, obviously) found it such an uplifting thing and when he received it - he wasn't in a good place, but to see how much effort had gone into it and how much the fans still think about him - it made him feel so overwhelmed and he genuinely said it helped his recovery. He wanted me to pass on A GREAT BIG THANK YOU to The Shed End for their messages and how much he appreciated reading all the kind words at a very hard time for him and his family.' --- So yeah, backs everything up.

That's pretty much what he told me to regarding the card, makes me so proud to be a member of this forum. To be honest I'm not much of a swearer in all other forms of life, just CFC gets me going. I think I may have managed to string one or two coherent sentences without sounding all awe-struck.

Here's him addressing the crowd at half time, I don't think he uttered three words before 'There's only one Bobby Tambling' thundered around the stadium. Note Val struggling to keep her emotions in.

(I'm sorry Barn I've totally taken over this thread...!)
