So Gary Neville is saying Jose Mourinho is Louis van Gaal's greatest contribution to Football, sometimes what this guy says makes literally no sense at all, but this time I must admit he may start to be telling some truth...

 

I know van Gaal is a 'very successful' manager. But I don't think its beyond the realms of possibility to believe this. Still find it hard to believe Mourinho was his assistant manager at Barcelona in the late 1990's.

Jose, himself, recently said they're very good friends.

I think Gary's forgetting Jose was Sir Bobby Robson's translator and assistant for five seasons (at three different clubs) before Robson was replaced by van Gaal at Barcelona. I'm sure van Gaal was important, but to say Jose is van Gaal's creation doesn't sound quite right.

From what I have read in the past in various places, Jose learnt most from Robson and had a lot of respect for Bobby. He never mentioned Van Gaal.

If you go back and watch when we lost to Barca in the Nou Camp back in 2000 Van Gaal was the coach. When they beat us Jose celebrates like crazy, weird to think about now lol

JM acknowledges both Robson and van Gaal as mentors who helped him early in his career. But it's a bit of a leap from that to being van Gaal's 'creation', any more than AVB or Rodgers are Jose's creations. Whatever Jose has achieved he's done through his own ability.
