Holland, Michigan? Must be, if you went to a match in Ann Arbor, Michigan :-)

Yup that's right. Good ol holland Michigan. Ever heard of it?

Yes, a few years back there was a tv programme on it. Didn't our king and queen visit the place?

And how is your Dutch :-) ? Did you ever do some genealogical research into your ancestors?

I'm not sure if the king or queen visited but I wouldn't be surprised if they did. It's a tasty little town. The only dutch word my grandpa taught me is Shlukke (spelling?) which means alcoholic beverage :). I actually took an ancestry test this winter and discovered that I was only about 27% dutch, which I found really surprising. Are you dutch or have any dutch connections?

I'm trying to think what Shlukke might be, but it doesn't ring a bell. It might be a local word from the area where your "opa" came from.

I am Dutch, but strictly speaking 37% German :-) living near Amsterdam. 27% Dutch is about one grandparent, what are the others?

Just thinking shlukke might be slokje, meaning a sip. Some people use it as a euphemism for an alcoholic beverage.

Yup he definitely uses slokje when referring to alcohol. And I thought all my grandparents were dutch but perhaps not. The last name on my mothers side is Barense. is that also a dutch name? My grandmothers last names were Gort and Jackson. Are those dutch?

Barense or Barendse and Gort are Dutch names, Jackson isn't. In the US so many people have such a diversity of ancestors, if you are 27% Dutch, it might not come from one single grandparent, but all 4 might have some Dutch ancestry, that adds up to 27% :-)
