Phillip Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 When I watched the match yesterday, I could not but be impressed by Valencia's fair play. They never went to ground needlessly, very little time wasting tactics, and they played very fair. I was also impressed by our play, and thought we were just a bit unluckly not to have scored two goals. Whether or not we advance to the next stage, I don't know, but I cannot help but think that we were not jobbed in the first leg (at best, the non-foul against Sheva just before Kalou hit the post would have been an obstruction, and an indirect free kick inside the box, but not a penalty kick).
sweet waffle Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 (at best, the non-foul against Sheva just before Kalou hit the post would have been an obstruction, and an indirect free kick inside the box, but not a penalty kick). That was a blatent foul of that I am sure. And what about all the holding that went on when we had a set piece. I'm sure they'll be a lot more diving/cheating on their part when we play in their yard as well.
loz Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 To an extent we have to to take the holding on the chin - if penalties were awarded for that then Crvalho would be giving penalties away on a weekly basis. However the foul on Sheva was not obstruction, it was a rash challenge and therefore was a nailed on penalty.
loz Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 CORRECTION!! I have just watched it again and I think Ayala's foul is actually outside the box and therefore it wasn't a penalty.

Penalty or freekick he still should have been sent off. I agree with you about the holding that we're a bad at it but it was crazy how many times they held JT down the ref must have surely seen it. It would have been sod's law that had we scored off a corner the ref would have promptly disallow it for holding. You know how it works.
MannyJello Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 i have to respectfully disagree with you regarding fair play. there were several incidents of time-wasting with phantom injuries in the 2nd half (though not as many as usual, i guess that's a good thing). however, watching off the ball, there were at least 10 examples i picked out where a Valencia player clutched, grabbed, or clattered into one of our players after the play was over or when the ball was nowhere around. i recall one in the first half; Lamps delivered an average square ball to another midfielder, and a Valencia player just absolutely charged into him at least three steps after the ball was gone. The referee already had his back turned. Lamps literally looked around with body language saying, "What the F was that?" He was more confused than upset.
TT Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 I thought that the referee was supposed to add on time for substitutions. I know I am nit-picking, but with about 20 seconds to go we had a throw-in deep in their half, with a outside chance of a goalscoring opportunity. They make a substitution, and as soon as the throw-in is taken the ref blows his whistle.
clubhappy Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 When we went a goal down i was prepared to settle for a draw. They were dangerous going forward and was dreading a second. I wasnt expecting us to win well , just a win a home but they are a quality side and if we do get a result next week , then id take anybody after that. Ayala should have gone , violent challenge and i though Sheva was lucky not to be seriously hurt. I thought Lamps delivery at set pieces was awful , but he did shine at times so i wouldnt regard him as having a crap game. I dont think for 1 miniute were out of it .
