Looks like a boxing ring in the centre of the pitch. Early - mid 1920s perhaps ?

November 1912: The Danish footballer Middleboe, a newly signed player for Chelsea on the pitch for a match against Derby County at The Bridge.

Circa 1930: It wasn't just football which drew the crowds, athletics was very popular too.

This game was played just few weeks after our first game at the Bridge. 

It would have enhanced the reputation of The Bridge and also brought in more revenue for the club.

Think the ‘large poles’ in front of the terracing, are a safety precaution for the speedway!
