evissy
That is close to a dream team, on paper. It is harder and harder to keep such a puzzle in one piece. Not sure if Rijkaard is up to it. Well, we just have to wait and see...in horror.
Alan
Abidal's signed for them, ?10m. Rumours are that Edmilson is on his way to Newcastle.
canbeas
edmilson is very average, for a defensive midfielder. he'll fit right in at st. james park. barcelona have an awesome team now. if they continue to play 4-3-3 then one of iniesta, toure, xavi and deco will have to be benched and the same goes for the four forwards; henry, messi, 'dinho and eto'o. imagine having players like andres iniesta and thierry henry on the bench. callista
Yes on paper this looks a mean side but let us remember a few important truths. You can only play 11 players at any one time. In this squad you are going to have some very unhappy highly thought of players on the bench. The coach you wonder if he can handle this kind of a hassle which might arise from keeping eveyone happy. Madrid have formulated similar star teams over the years and won bugger all. There is no guarantee that all the new signings will immediately settle in and that all the existing signings will be in great form. And last and by no means least, if Barca can't sort out their defence it doesn't matter what they have up front - they'll ship goals. But...if everything does work then yes it's some team - the team to beat you would argue.
The Moos
I agree with Callista. And remember this: A great team needs a great manager to achieve great things. Barcelona might have a really good team but in my oppinion Rijkaard isn't a great manager. He's good, but not great. We on the other hand have a really good team and also a really good manager. I doubt Rijkaard would have done as well as Mourinho at Chelsea this last season. Rijkaard is good at leading a team that's playing well, but as soon as they stop doing that he has real trouble getting them back on track. Mourinho waves his magic wand and within a few minutes Chelsea are back on top.
callista
The Moos: And remember this:A great team needs a great manager to achieve great things. Hell yes, forgot about that rather important point! Barcelona might have a really good team but in my oppinion Rijkaard isn't a great manager. Totally agree, he's a nice guy, was a fantastic player and he does pretty attacking football but the defence is all over the place and I don't think he can be labelled great yet by any means. I also wonder if he has the personality to handle all these players, from the way some of the team keep mouthing off to the Spanish press each week I have a feeling he's out of his depth at times. Rijkaard is good at leading a team that's playing well, but as soon as they stop doing that he has real trouble getting them back on track. Agreed. Mourinho waves his magic wand and within a few minutes Chelsea are back on top. Hardly ever fails in that area and when he does it's a real talking point because it's that rare he mucks it up. And even when he fails he's decisive about it!

Guest
Barca next season:-----------------------Valdes------------------------ ---------------------Puyol Marquez-------------------- Messi--Iniesta--Xavi--Deco---Toure------Ronaldinho -----------------------Henry Etoo---------------------- I'm thinking they will probably go something more like: --------------back four------------------ ---------Xavi-----------Toure----------- Messi-------Ronaldinho-----------Henry ----------------Eto'o--------------------- so a 4-2-3-1 formation. As long as they all remain reasonably disciplined they should do very well together (the front 4). that said, given Rijkaard's experimentation with a 3 man defence last season. we could also see a 3-3-3-1 formation with a defensive midfielder sitting in front of the defence. -----------------back 3------------------- -----------------Toure-------------------- ---------Xavi-----------Iniesta----------- Messi-------Ronaldinho-----------Henry ----------------Eto'o---------------------- At least thats how I would do it (with perhaps a more defensive midfielder in place of Iniesta). Guest Brian M
Messi-------Ronaldinho-----------Henry ----------------Eto'o---------------------- I'm sorry, but if I were a defender and I knew those four players were going to be charging up field toward me for 90 minutes, I'd be crapping myself big time. That really is about as good an attack as money can buy. I mean, come on Barca. You're taking the p*ss! Imagine how we'd feel if Liverfool or Arse or Manure had that attack. Expect a lot of victories from them next season by cricket scores...because if all four of those players are on song in the same game...

Sometimes I think when things look too good to be true, they are too good to be true. On paper it looks frightening but I think if any team is scared of that line up before a match then Barca have won already on rep alone. And often with Barca on the surface they look stunning but dig a little deeper and they are built on weak foundations. All flash no steel. I used to watch a lot of Barca games a few years back, when they had Rivaldo, Figo, Guardiola, Kluivert, Cocu et all all at the top of their game. It never used to cease to amaze me how a team with that much talent could be frequently undone by some cheap goal given away because of their dodgy defense. And the teams that beat them often were not stellar but they were simply solid, organised, unfazed and unafraid.
Guest Brian M
Sometimes I think when things look too good to be true, they are too good to be true. Like that time I picked up Cam Diaz at the Bondi Icebergs when she was on her Charlie's Angels promo-tour, and took her back to a fancy room at the Swiss Grand hotel...only to find out she was actually a Cam impersonator from Oxford street named Gerald? That kind of 'too good to be true' you mean...
