New blood needed

Chelsea legend Ron Harris has urged Avram Grant to buy a new striker in the January transfer window.

The Blues have been denied the services of Didier Drogba due to injury in recent games and are set to lose the striker for an extended spell when he goes to play for Ivory Coast at the African Cup of Nations.

And while Harris was impressed with Andriy Shevchenko's display in the 4-4 draw with Aston Villa on Boxing Day, he feels the Blues need to add a prolific scorer to their ranks if they are to stay in the title race.

He told Sky Sports News: "I feel they could do with somebody who is going to score 15-20 goals a season and play alongside Drogba.

"If you'd seen Andriy Shevchenko yesterday, you'd have thought they don't really need anybody. If he was to play like that a bit more often I wouldn't think they would need anybody else up front.

"But I think they are going to miss Drogba when he goes to the African Nations Cup and they need somebody to get them a hatful of goals. But I suppose everyone is looking for those sorts of players at the moment.

"Nicolas Anelka's name has been touted around and it would be interesting to see if he is coming to Chelsea."

Harris remains hopeful that his former team can catch Manchester United and Arsenal in the title race, but expects Sir Alex Ferguson's side to prove too strong this season.

Betting man

However, he expects the winner of the Champions League to be an English side and reckons Chelsea could triumph in that competition.

He added: "I'm not a betting man, but if I would like to think my old club Chelsea could pull off the title.

"But I think you've got to go with Man United. They've been there and done it and seem to be picking up a bit of form.

"People talk about Arsenal, but I think they've got too many youngsters at the moment and have still got to prove that they can maintain a challenge in the Premier League. So I'd stick my neck out and say Man United will win the title.

"I've got a feeling one of the English sides will win the Champions League this season. I don't think there's too many outstanding candidates at the moment.

"Barcelona are going through a funny spell and AC Milan are not doing particularly well, so the winner could come from Manchester United, Liverpool or Chelsea."

i would not sneer at Crouch in blue, not at all.. If we persist in this lone striker supported by two misfiring wide forwards, then i still say Darren Bent as i think he could be good in that role. Funnily enough i would not put Crouch in that category.

We need options, thats for sure.

Too much is put on Drogba.

I would welcome Crouch. He is a vastly under-rated and under-used player who has a family that all support Chelsea.

BTW...what the hell are you on about Peeking Duck?

Or dare I ask? 844.gif

Peter Crouch is one of the most over-rated players in the history of the game! The only reason the press don't ridicule him is because he plays for their beloved scousers - and they can't possibly be seen to question a Liverpool signing, can they? The bloke's a clown, and his reputation got over-hyped when he started scoring goals for England - against the likes of Jamaica, etc....

If we buy Crouch, then that would prove what I've thought from day one - Grant isn't fit to manage Chelsea, or even Tooting & Mitcham icon_rolleyes.gif

The idea of Crouch in Blue is a horrible one, and is in no way a decent replacement for Drogba.

Drogba can hold defenders off using his strength, turn, and run at them.

Crouch climbs all over defenders, giving away free kicks, and remains completely static.

All he does, is bring the wingers into play, and wait in the box for a return ball, and being that we dont have an abundance of decent width at the moment, would be pretty useless...

Best guess, the metaphor, 'They can start the transfusion at the top by ditching the cadaver. Then maybe, and only then, will the new signings have a chance' is talking about getting rid of the manager, Jimbo. 300.gif Messy mixed metaphor I grant you, but metaphors are tricky things to get right, even if English is your first language!
