Valerie
I've just returned from holiday (very nice, thank you very much, good thing I missed Holland's QF), but after a ten day absence from the forums, I've lost track of Chelsea developments. So are Lampard, Carvalho and Drogba staying or not? Did we buy some Chenko or Binho or not? Please tell me we've finally gotten rid of SWP and Sidwell! Anyone care to give me a quick update? Thanks! Tim
Well in a nutshell Val (welcome back!), nothing really has happened, except Maka has signed a year extension to his contract. Other than that all seems to be paused until Big Phil gets a chance to survey the troops, although it looks very likely that Frank will be on his way. Sidwell is waiting to see if the new boss wants him before going to Villa, and SWP will probably be Pompey-bound, if rumours are to be believed. DD's future is still unclear, and we're still none the wiser about who we might be trying to sign.

Tim
I thought about that when typing actually, but decided Fil just looks wrong. Still, fair point, don't want to P*ss off the gaffer...
Tim
And you're welcome Val, and yes you could have stayed on hols for a week or so longer to be honest. I am getting itchy feet waiting for clarification on who we're shipping in/out and just want the season to begin!
Guest
Well in a nutshell Val (welcome back!), nothing really has happened, except Maka has signed a year extension to his contract. Is that confirmed? I have a strong feeling we will see Ronaldinho in blue next season subject to him passing the medical.
Tim
Ronnie AND Deco Qaz, really? You may have a point, given how well Scolari knows them, but I hope we don't. Deco can be our 'veteran' signing, but I don't want another one, as much as I would have preferred Ronnie out of the two of them. (probably) Well they are different players who play different roles within the side. There is no doubt in my mind that Scolari is actively looking for creative, attacking midfielders in the Ronaldinho mould for Chelsea next season. That was a significant area of weakness for us last season and probably the area we are most intent on fixing.
Tim
Agreed, and that position (along with strikers) is clearly the one that needs strengthening the most, by a long way. I am torn I guess. On the one hand, I don't like us buying a couple of older players and Barca cast-offs, on the other hand, both are undoubtedly world class on their day, and if we could do a similarly good deal for Ronnie price-wise, would that be better than splashing the cash on Robinho or another young winger with promise? Possibly. I am content with Deco, but am still waiting for the signing that will really excite me... Edited July 2, 2008 by Tim
Guest
I am content with Deco, but am still waiting for the signing that will really excite me... Deco's one of the better attacking midfielders in world football, if he's not going to excite you, who will? Kaka, Messi, C.Ronaldo?......the list is likely to be very short. ozboy
In a similar vein, which spots still need to be filled? We have the right fullback. Unless Riccy leaves we have the defence sorted. There is a surplus in midfield, which to my mind just leaves a spot for one out and out forward, unless dd leaves and then we need two.
Tim
What would excite me is a raw, young hungry player, who still has some way to go, but has shown enough glimpses of world class ability to be worth a punt. I want us to make our own stars by buying players who have one more step to go on the football ladder. For example: Torres - was know to be sh*t hot at Athletico, but he has (sadly) truly 'arrived' at L*verpool. Ronaldo - was a kid with potential who has become world class at Manure. Berbatov - a star in the German league, but inconsistent and has really come alive since the move to the EPL. I could go on and on, but the point is that what would excite me the most is us doing something similar, taking a calculated risk with a player who has much still to prove and who we can honestly say is 'our' player. Frank is a great example of how we have done it the past, so let's do it again. Im not against the signing of Deco and I'm sure that I will become more enthusiastic once the season starts and he shows his quality, but all im saying is that the idea that the club have done their homework and are keen to put faith in a younger player with oodles of potential, such as an Aguero or VDV ,would excite me more. That's all.
