To be honest, we all know Torres has it in for us, LOL. It's been what, 6 goals in 8 games before this and now 8 in 9? Talk about doing our homework. Terry is right to be a bit disappointed. Kuyt also came in and was a huge difference for them. His work ethic is quite amazing, and that chipped pass to send Torres through for their first was pretty amazing. On the other end of things, Drogba being on the bench and Essien missing entirely was a huge blow for us. With Lamps out, Essien has been a huge part of why we haven't, for the most part, stuttered. Mikel, as improved as he has been, is not going to carry our midfield. Neither is new boy Ramires, although much more is expected of him. Even Zhirkov is a "supporting" player rather than a main man. As such, we lost the midfield battle, simply put. I thought we did much better after the break and Liverpool did ride their luck a bit with some good saves and fairy dust on the crossbar. So, while I am disappointed we lost, I don't have a whole lot to complain about. I agree we are a bit light on the bench in terms of being able to change things significantly. Kalou (who I am aware started today) will only ever be a bit part player. I will never expect him to come on and make a huge difference. Sturridge has been disappointing with his output, McEachran is too early in his development, and Kakuta hasn't been given enough of a run to say either way. Like you, I wish we had someone like Tevez - someone who can change a game. On the other hand, I find it difficult to argue with the "give youth a chance" policy. So, all I can say is there will be days like these. For the most part, we've done brilliantly, and I am confident enough we will win the league with our physical strength and ability to grind out results. However, the Champions League is a different kettle of fish and I don't think we currently have enough weapons to change things significantly when things aren't working - something important against Europe's finest. I think people need to understand you can't have it both ways. No team can win everything (not unless you have a LOT of luck, which simply cannot be expected or planned). As such, the manager has to play to his odds. In past years when we had a much stronger "squad", I maybe would have felt a bit worse about how things turned out. As is, Carlo put out a "weakened" side to (1) rest his key players, thus "protecting" them for the long haul, and (2) give youngsters that he will have to rely on much more heavily than he normally would have, given this "new" FA prerogative to "develop from within" as opposed to relying on established foreign players, valuable competitive playing time. You also have to keep in mind that leadership is important (and thus probably why he risked JT in the starting line-up) but Chelsea is never the same when we're missing the likes of Cech, Lampard, Essien and Drogba (the spine of the team). I think it was difficult for all involved out there today. Maybe we can make general observations such as (1) the kids aren't ready, (2) Ross may not be up to the standard expected at Chelsea, or (3) Paulo isn't the same player he was a few years ago and likely the injury has had something to do with it, but really nobody is saying the kids are ready to step in and "replace" key established first teamers (and thus they need the experience). It was always going to be a big ask. Maybe you could make the argument that Carlo should have included more established first teamers and only "blooded" a select few youngsters to give them a better chance of "doing well". However, it brings me back to the point that Carlo probably feels he also needs to give some of his established players a rest. All things being ideal, I am sure we would like to win everything under the sun, and I am also sure we don't really want to give the impression we are "degrading" the competition, but the FA is giving us very little choice with the hectic schedule (including international matches) and the new rules governing squad composition. I choose to look at it this way: two of the three major objectives were accomplished. We gave our established players some needed rest ahead of an important/significant match away at Manchester City this weekend, and we gave our youngsters some much needed and valuable competitive game time. Sure, our third major objective of winning the game did not go to plan, but that is something that we just have to take in our stride. Again, we cannot win everything, and squad-wise we're much less equipped to do that this year than in some recent ones. Cheers, Butch

We're all sounding a bit desperate IMHO! :) My feeling is that Abramovich wants us to look for the "next big thing", as opposed to always signing the current world stars. Experience has taught us that the truly great players are few and far between, and once a club has them signed, they want to keep them. As for the next big things, these are also going to be difficult to find, with the added difficulty of gauging the potential for success at such a young age. And it's not like other clubs aren't looking to do the same. So, the pressure to bite the bullet despite the risk is quite great. I'm still a little uncomfortable with the hoopla surrounding this possible signing. I really don't think an 18 year old, no matter how good, is going to be ready to walk into our starting line-up. And you can very much understand the hesitance of a young player to up and leave from somewhere where he is an established player, move to a totally foreign country, and essentially start from scratch to fight to get into the playing squad. I just hope, if he does sign, that he'll be up for a fight and not resort to Robinho-esque behavior when things don't go well. The character of the player is just as important as his footballing skills. The bottom line from a Chelsea fan's perspective is this: we should not be expecting the world from Neymar, that is, if he does come, certainly not in the short term. I sincerely doubt this signing would have a significant impact on this season for certain, and I gather probably for another 2-3 seasons. It is more than likely he'll have a bit part role to play. In this regard, the current squad of players we have is what we should be pinning any hopes of success on, and rightly so. At the same time, if Abramovich and his advisors, including Carlo, are happy with the potential of the player, we should go for it - for the future of the club. If we don't bite the bullet, it is more than likely (a) someone else will beat us to it, or (B) we'll have to pay even more for him at a later date (again, all dependent on if he is good enough). Just imagine the pressure he'd be under, what with the amount of money it will cost for Chelsea to sign him, and with fans (me included) expectant of additional creativity in the squad. It looks for all intents and purposes, whether this goes through or not, as being one of the last, if not the last, deals Chelsea is looking to tie up before the end of the transfer window. I am quite concerned that if he signs he won't really be given time to settle and "be ready" to be thrown into the mix. I guess while things go well for us, the problem may not be too apparent. But if we were to struggle with injuries and/or form, look out! If I had a choice, I'd go with Ozil as less of a risk and someone who could be "thrown into the mix" quite quickly. But Neymar does sound like one of the few genuinely exciting young prospects out there, and I can only hope he's given time. Cheers, Butch
