I don't think there can be a fixed set of rules to follow when it comes to transfers. The situations are very dynamic and change almost on a daily basis as there are many variables involved ( the player himself, his agent, both negotiation teams, the club's owners, rival clubs, etc). I think it's a case of everyone involved at our club took things for granted because it was essentially a one-horse race.
