Ben Gordon is heading back to Chelsea after the Stamford Bridge club ended his loan deal at Kilmarnock.

The 19-year-old left-back has been a key part of Killie's rise to fourth place in the Scottish Premier League under Finnish manager Mixu Paatelainen.

The Rugby Park boss said after Monday's 2-0 win over St Mirren: "We tried to lengthen his loan spell but Chelsea want to put him on loan in England.

"It's their decision, but unfortunately he is not staying longer here."

Last week Gordon, having said how much he was enjoying playing first-team football at Kilmarnock, had expressed the hope that the clubs could agree to extend the duration of his loan.

But his loan period expired on Monday and he leaves Ayrshire having contributed to a run of seven wins and two draws in Kilmarnock's last 10 SPL games.

A slightly interesting decision by the club seeing that he is a left back. Can't see him getting many games in that position unless Ash gets injured. Can he play right back?

As it says in the article, he is heading to an English club on loan. Wet Spam? I heard they need a left back. I hope not. I want him to go somewhere he can get regular game time and I dont think a prem club can guarantee that at the moment because most of the first eleven are settled. Maybe a champo club. Lets see.

If he was enjoying his time there might as well have let him stay, what's the point in upsetting him just so he's closer to London...He's not going to break into our team anyway.

I am sorry to be leaving. I wanted to stay until the end of the season but it is up to Chelsea and they wanted me to go back nearer to them and unfortunately that's the way it is.

I have to go back to training at Chelsea for three or four days and then they will decide where I go next

I think the second paragraph is the key. I'd interpret that as the club wanting to have a look at him and assess his progress before deciding where he goes next. There might well be plans in place to send him on loan to a Championship side, for instance.

Apparently this is our first loanee in Scotland and we dont have resources to gauge his performance in Scotland. Which is one of the reasons Gordon is being recalled and the player is keen on proving himself.

He's off to Sc**thorpe for the rest of the season:

Injured Chelsea reserve Ben Gordon makes Iron loan move

Sc**thorpe United have agreed a loan deal for the rest of the season for Chelsea reserve full-back Ben Gordon.

But 19-year-old Gordon's debut will be delayed by a hamstring injury picked up while on loan at Kilmarnock, which will keep him out for three weeks.

"It was us that went to Chelsea and asked the question," Iron manager Ian Baraclough told BBC Sport.

"Chelsea see we're the right club to enhance his career. He's a bright lad who's comfortable on the ball."

Young Yorkshireman Gordon came through the Leeds Academy system before moving to Stamford Bridge in 2007 for compensation.

The Bradford lad has been on loan with Scottish Premier League side Kilmarnock since the summer, making 21 appearances for Mixu Paatelainen's men.

But, after picking up his hamstring injury in his final appearance for Killie, in their 2-0 win at St Mirren on Monday, Gordon will have to wait for his Scunny debut.

"I would have been delighted to have him for Saturday's FA Cup tie against Everton," said Iron boss Baraclough. "But that's been put back a little bit now."

Meanwhile, Baraclough is happy that midfielder Bobby Grant is getting the most out of his loan spell under Keith Hill at League One side Rochdale.

The 19-year-old midfielder, who joined Dale in November after finding first team opportunities limited at Glanford Park, is expected to stop on at Spotland until the end of the season, once his current loan runs out in February.

And Baraclough told BBC Radio Humberside: "Bobby is gaining good experience, playing in every game.

"He is happy to stay there, I am happy for him to stay there, as is Keith Hill. All parties are happy."

Grant signed for Sc**thorpe from Accrington Stanley in July 2010, for a fee which could rise up to £260,000, but he has only made one league start all season.

He scored on his Rochdale debut in a 3-3 draw with Swindon Town, and has featured in every match during his stay in Lancashire.

Another Iron player, 23-year-old goalkeeper Josh Lillis is also currently on loan at Rochdale, his second spell at the club.
