May 8, 201610 yr I'm writing something about how intimidating Upton Park was for visiting fans. Did you have any "experiences" walking down Green St? What made it a scary place to go? Obviously changed a lot since the 70s and 80s, but do you think it still had that aura in the modern era? Or was it a myth? All contributions appreciated! Will send the link tmrw when it's done. Cheers Kev
May 8, 201610 yr i had a couple of very scary experiences at upton park in the 70's, that put me off going to football matches for a long time. Seeing that i was the odd one out as a kid being a chelsea fan and most of my mates were west ham i used to go along with them to the odd game. Seeing running street battles with grown men attacking away fans with bricks and bottles, struggling to get home because tubes full of other fans would just turn up after the final whistle looking for a fight, and finally getting mugged inside the ground by westham fans was enough to keep me away from football matches for quite a few years.

May 9, 201610 yr Yeh it was scary.......back in 1969 /70 season for a Chelsea away game there, ....I arrived early and stood in the North bank wearing a blue & white scarf and quickly hid it under my jacket, when I realised that I was the only Chelsea fan in the North bank ! The Following year I was in the South bank with the main Chelsea mob. But there wasn't much crowd segregation in those days. I used to live near Woolwich and used the Woolwich ferry them bus or walk to East Ham where the ground is .....strange as the boleyne stadium is actually in East Ham but they call themselves West Ham ? !
